Last Post On New Links

posted by mmChronic @ 11:17:00 AM

You may have noticed New Links has been a bit quiet over the last few days and that's because we've upped and moved sticks to a new site. We'll still be bringing you the same sort of drivel as before but on a much better site. The site is still nowhere near complete yet as I'm adding features daily but it is usable (more so than this one) and definitely readable.

We've moved because Blogger has become unusable for long periods of time with frequent timeouts and publishing errors. I'm not knocking Blogger too much mind - we've been running for almost 1.5 years on Blogger and for the most part it's been fine (check out the archives for 'vintage' New Links posts - there are thousands) but recently it has been excruciatingly slow to use. Blogger have added plenty of new features but a lot of the features are cosmetic (like prettier comment entry with avatars - bizarrely those avatars don't get shown on the post pages alongside the comments. They must just be used to give you something to look at while you take 32 minutes to publish your snappy comeback) they need to be addressing their backend problems. Everyone is doing free blogging services now - they have to be free and good to survive.

When you publish as frequently we do (we've managed 20/30 posts in a day plenty of times) it becomes a PITA when you have a load of posts ready and find yourself taking hours to publish due to the errors. So we've moved to cheap hosting and I've been hacking way to install Drupal which is a platform that lets you do a lot more than just posting links. It's slowly coming together but we've taken the decision to move all posting to the new site - it's so much nicer being able to publish in seconds.

So if you link to this site please update your bookmarks/blogroll - as I said before we are still posting the same kind of stuff but we have added a lot features to make the site more customisable for you. It's New Links++! I'll be adding sites to our blogroll (which I've just installed ten minutes ago) over the next few days - if I've missed you off let me know on the site.

New Links est mort, vive New Links. Yay!

Coming to a store near you soon, an 8 Inch Digital LCD Screen which doesn't sound very new but what's good about this is that it only fits the new slimline PS2 (which is about one quarter the size of the original PS2). So not quite a handheld but small enough to fit in your hand luggage.

What Age Do You Act?

posted by mmChronic @ 7:02:00 PM

According to the "What Age Do You Act?" quiz I'm
You Are 19 Years Old

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

MyBlogLog

posted by mmChronic @ 12:43:00 PM

ILuvNUFC emailed me last week about MyBlogLog which has a neat little service so you can find out what external links people are clicking on that is installed by putting one line of code in your template. You can see from normal stats which internal links people are clicking on but there's no of knowing which of the links we post get clicked on - well apart when we get the owner of the linked site doing some whining. It's a bit crap relying on pissing someone off to find out if a link is popular so MyBlogLog is very handy indeed.

For the first week you get a free trial of the Pro version then you drop down to the free version at the end of the week. The only difference I can see is the free one limits displaying the Top 10 clicks out for a given day whereas the Pro version allows you to see all links. You can even report on a given range of dates and it'll total up the clicked links in that range - again limiting you to top 10 only on the Free version.

So what were our most popular links this week? These:

 1 (487) Happy Slap videos
2 (337) Video for Amarillo btw - all those looking for 'free mp3 downloads' of this should be deeply ashamed of themselves. It's for fscking charidee - go and buy it you tight cnut.
3 (137) Dance White Boy Dance
4 (104) Teenage Porno Ninja Turtles
 5 (78) esure (working link)
6 (70) The Commonly Confused Words Test
7 (44) Calm Down Dear remix (original link now not working. See whinge)
8 (41) Comments on Happy Slapping
9 (38) 13 things that do not make sense
10 (37) iNO

Key: Position (number of clicks) Link to relevant post.

Two of our Technorati tags (Film and Ninja) appeared in the top 10 but I haven't included them due to fact they have been on multiple posts and this score will be the total clicks from all of them. We are now on the Free version so I won't be able to do that in future if I do this again the top ten will be the top ten reported.

So of the top ten links 9 are mine and 1 (number 2) is for Bungers. I'm afraid the rest of the lads will have to improve their linkage quality. ;)

That's now 3 posts (1, 2) about blogging in a row - quick Flip we need some boobies! ;)

New New Links Coming Soon?

posted by mmChronic @ 10:30:00 AM

I mentioned the other day that we were all getting heartly sick of Blogspot's frequent cackness and said we might well have to move to a paid service.

I've already decided on the publishing platform we will use (more on that later) and so had two things still to do before moving us:
1) Choosing a CHEAP host that was capable of hosting the software I've chosen.
2) Coming up with a domain name.

I think I've found us a very cheap host so that just leaves the domain to sort out. Well that and a huge amount of work on the back end which will make me whinge even more about lack of posting from other NewLinkers! ;)

Newlinks.co.uk is owned by a UK website company. They should donate it to us as they are crap at their jobs - click the website link on the front page for proof. That's been broke at least as long as our NewLinks has been running. Note: if newlinks.co.uk want their website updated we'll do it for money, beer and weed - mostly weed! Obviously they won't donate the domain name to us so onto the next choice.

Newlinks.com has been registered since 1997 and nothing has been done with it since. My Admiral Akbar senses tingled at this one - it smells like someone sitting on a domain waiting for a chance to make money by suing someone. That's why I'm not keen on Bungers' suggestion of NewLinks2.com - the owner of NewLinks might complain about infringing trademarks yada yada yada.

Newlinks.org and .net point to some ad portal shizzle so I won't even bother giving them the benefit of a link.

We could use a different TLD altogether like cx, tk eg newlinks.tk. I toyed with registering newlin.cx but decide against it as I wouldn't mind keeping newlinks in the domain for Google purposes.

The quicker we can come up with a name the quicker I can register it and start setting up a new site - so let's have your suggestions sharpish please!

Top of the British Blogs

posted by mmChronic @ 8:13:00 AM

Mark over at the BritBlog Directory has just launched the Top Of The British Blogs Chart which I was talking about the other week.

EVERYONE on this chart is being counted the same way and it is also an automated process leaving it less open to errors while collating the visit data. If you are British and have a blog you can enter the charts here.

So onto the first charts themselves. New Links has repeated it's success in the short lived British Blog Charts by placing at number three in the first chart. Yay!

Other blogs in the charts that we know about / link to are A Welsh View, The Flophouse, Stephen Newton's diary of sorts and DoctorVee. There's also an entry for Gordon McLean (creator of Scottish Blogs) who has been using New Links as a source for a couple of his link blog links recently. It's very incestuous this blogging malarkey!

Another iPod Knockoff

posted by mmChronic @ 11:28:00 AM

And unlike the other day's iNO this one is an actual mp3 player. This Chinese iPod Mini 'tribute' has a 4Gb drive, 12 hour battery life, FM radio, line in mp3 encoding (neat idea allowing you to fill the disk without going near a computer by encoding music direct from stereos, CD Walkman etc) and, due to it supporting various formats (MP3, WMA, DRM WMA and ADPCM), you don't have to be reamed by Jobs to own one.

No mention of price but I bet it comes in quite a few quid cheaper than Apple's offering.

via Waxy

PS. I first attempted to post this at 8:17ish am this morning. Blogger want to get their act sorted out or they are going to lose their market share - I've seen many good blogs move from Blogger to Anything But Blogger over the last year due to it's shite record on publishing. If that carries on they'll be left with only txt spk blogs - and it will serve them right. I've already chosen a blogging engine (and it's not any of the other usual suspects) for New Links 2. This weekend I'll be looking at hosting plans I reckon. It will of course mean ads to help pay for costs as there's no way we're paying owt!

Bootleg Browser

posted by mmChronic @ 3:43:00 PM

Did somebody say bootlegs?

Bootleg Browser is a site that "links to audio & video of live music shows". There are currently 393 links to various bootlegs and the spread of artists is massive - the list includes such varied artists as Green Day, Elvis Presley, Jamiroquai, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd and Many, Many More™.

A few of the links I recognise from various ILuvNUFC posts so you may know some of these already but have a look though as I'm sure there'll be something there for everyone. Today I will be mostly paying scant regard to copyright laws.

13 Things That Do Not Make Sense

posted by mmChronic @ 9:38:00 AM

Interesting article on the New Scientist site called "13 things that do not make sense" which list 13 scientific phenomena that have no scientific explanation. It covers things like the placebo effect, homeopathy (though it points out only the mentioned study has had results as reported - I wonder if it is the same one highlighted in the Horizon documentary on homeopathy?) the possibilty of another large planet in our solar system, the ever accelerating Pioneer spacecraft, anomalous results from the Viking mission to Mars and cosmic rays that break the laws of relativity.

While on the subject of relativity - here's an explanation of Einstein's Theory Of Relativity using words of four letters or less. It's still just as difficult to understand but the words are easier to read! ;)

Conqueror!

If you fancy some free, online, turn based strategy action try Conqueror!. It's played across a medieval map of Europe and up to 16 (human or computer) players can play at once. Even though it's turn based they've come up with a way to ensure everyone takes their turn at the same time reducing waiting time to a minimum.

Might we have finally found a game that we can have a New Links online gaming session on? It's free (like RTCW:ET), it doesn't require an Xbox (unlike PES4 or Burnout 3 - both of which I bought but was only able to play Bungers and Dogs respectively) or fancy 3D hardware (as we don't all buy a new graphics card every 3 months). I guess that that's a no then.

Two button mouse - on an Apple?

Apparently this classic comeback is to be made redundant by Apple.

Apple are reported to be creating a... Shock! Horror! 2 buttoned mouse. Welcome to the 20th century guys! ;)

So I wonder if ardent Apple afficionados will do a "from these cold, dead hands" with their one buttoned mouse as I have seen many arguments over mouse buttons online - and the consensus from the Apple community seemed to be that you couldn't ever possibly usefully use a second button. I seem to use all five of the buttons on my mouse with regularity.

State of The Blogosphere Part 1: Growth of Blogs

posted by mmChronic @ 10:53:00 AM

Technorati's Dave Sifry (who has left comments on this blog regarding Technnorati Tags) has written an interesting post on rapid growth of blogs as counted by Technorati. There are apparently 30-40 thousand blogs created every day. If you discount Bungers' spoof blogs that's still at least 25K per day!

The number of blogs in the world is doubling every five months which you would think means New Links will have even more competition for readers but I saw another study a while back that reckoned the number of blog readers is growing at an even faster pace than the number of bloggers so there should be plenty of new readers for everyone. Yay!

Part two of the article will be about frequency of posting which should give a good measure of how many of those new blogs actually ever get updated. There are so many dead blogs out there that have only one or two posts. We are just over a year old yet hit over 3000 posts ages ago so there's no fear of that here. I would tell you how many posts we have done to date but the post stats are like pretty much everything else on Blogger these days - broken. Come on Google spend some money - we want to see how much crap we've written!

So you want to spread the Word of God to the yoof of today but feel the archaic prose in the Bible just won't get through to them? Never fear Bible Rap is here. Here's a sample so you can start God rapping right away.
Once there was a man who found a treasure.
Hidden in a field, and he took pleasure.
In selling all he had to buy that field.
To gain the treasure it would yield.
God has a treasure, it's hidden away.
But seek and you shall find some day.
That treasure he offers which is life through the Son.
A life which will last after your life here is done.

The vagrants, from a Dutch town called Sneek, are picked up each evening by a taxi paid for by the local authorities. The taxi takes them to nearby Leeuwarden, where they are given beds for the night at a shelter. They are then chauffeur driven back at 9am the next morning at a cost of £76 a day. According to authorities in Sneek, it's not worth building a shelter of their own because there are not enough vagrants to fill it. Leeuwarden officials, the website reports, say they are not bothered by the daily trip to their town "as long as they go back to Sneek in the morning", said a spokesman.

From the Touchline...Unbiased Match Report...

posted by Flip @ 6:30:00 PM

A resolute (read boring) Newcastle shut up shop early - do they have shops up t'north? - and remained under seige for the rest of the match...
Plucky...skillfull and industious Spurs...bravely battled against "wor" Alan's diving...Bowyers strange belief he was playing basketball - given the number of times he handled in the box - and a referee that was so obviously in love with Mr Shearer it was sickening to even the softest southerner...

Main talking points of the match were the ridiculous "joke white beard" sported by "wor " Alan...surely in a bid to dazzle the Spurs defence...the FA really needs to look into that particular piece of gamesmanship...Ledley King...for ever more will be known by Spurs fans as Ledley Queen given the mincing tackle he made on Mr S that led to the first goal...Robbie Keane's bid to become the soccer player with the gayest haircut... Tottenham's Brown has obviously been watching too many wrestling shows as he spent more time trying to grapple anyone in sight than playing football...

And of course the superb GOAL Spurs scored in injury time... that should have seen the Newcastle squad jumping aboard their horse drawn cart for their first trip to the bright lights of the capital...sadly Gardner breathed on the fragile Toon defence..."wor" Alan made gooey eyes at the referee and Robbie's GOAL was incredibly dissallowed...

Man of the Match...a really quite horrendous Geordie spotted in the crowd wearing a complete Burberry outfit...daahling that is soo last year to us soft southerners...

Quote from Souness at full time: "Spurs were the better team..."

Final Score - Ref's XI 1 : Spurs 0

This is Flip from the touchline handing back to the studio...

Seriously well played lads....or something...hehe...

For those of you unfamiliar with the passion of English soccer...and in particular the FA Cup...today the Mighty Toon..hard faced coal mining stock... plays the ahem...stylish but fragile soft southerners Spurs (my team)...given this is a t'Northern blog at heart...we are like excited schoolboys at the prospect of taking the p**s out of the loser...should be fun..

Their hero...and a man who is looked upon as God like up t'north..is "wor" Alan Shearer...a man's who's personality makes paint drying an acceptable spectator sport...people like photoshopping Alan Shearer...hehe..may the best team win boys...

No doubt I shall be eating my words a little later...but as all great soccer managers say.."let's hope football is the winner to day..."

Anonymous, Encrypted P2P Anyone?

posted by mmChronic @ 9:22:00 AM

BitTorrent 4.0 was released the other day (and is flying off the virtual shelves as it were) but I haven't touched BitTorrent for ages now as I don't fancy handing all my worldly possessions over to the MPAA or becoming somebody's cellbitch. It's well known that various bodies are monitoring BitTorrent traffic, identifying people sharing mp3s/films, noting their ip addresses and suing them.

Well there's a new P2P network called ANts P2P to try which promises:
ANts P2P realizes a third generation P2P net. It protects your privacy while you are connected and makes you not trackable, hiding your identity (ip) and crypting everything you are sending/receiving from others.

Sounds good to me. I don't know how secure this is as I've only just found this but this weekend I'll be giving this ago (and watching Spurs get beat 6-1 naturally) so may know a little more by next week.

Colouring Mono Images Algorithmically

posted by mmChronic @ 2:23:00 PM

Here's a brilliant piece about turning black and white images and video clips to colour with very little effort involved. You just scrawl a few lines and dots of colour on a mono image and some clever maths does the rest. Even more impressively do the same thing every few frames of a mono video and the maths extrapolates it across the whole clip - you'll have to watch the video clips to see how impressive this is.

The method can even be used to recolour coloured images - ie change people's clothes from red to blue. I've seen recoloured black and white stuff before and it always look over coloured - this method of doing it looks amazing.

Speaking of Kevin Scott being a cast off which Spurs gave us too much money for what about Ruel Fox(Crap and we doubled our investment), Sir Les(past it and got at least our money back if not more, just don't mention Paul Gascoigne and Chris Waddle!
Anyhoo, I'd like to know if you all have a pension sorted, if not how about the Spurs Pension plan.

Need a Pension?... Are you worried about the future? Let's face it, we're not getting any younger and we all have to think about our lavish lifestyles, after our careers are over. Are you over 33? Are you well past your best?

Are you looking for an easy life? Yes? Then You Are Eligible For the Spurs Life Plan!! Spurs pay you £30,000 a week, there's a pointless medical, and no sales person will call (well you might get a shot in the private plane). CALL NOW! There's a FREE house, luxury car and limitless golf at some of England's finest courses.

Don't take our word for it, read these recommendations by some of our satisfied clients;

"When I'm no longer playing, I know my family will be financially secure" Gus, London.

"I recommend the Spurs Life Plan to all my family" Christian, London.

"The Spurs plan supplemented my pension, just when I thought it was too late" Dean R London.

"The generosity of the Spurs plan is unmatched in the world of pension finance. It was the best move we ever made" Jamie and Louise, Essex.

"Even when everyone said I was too old, Spurs were prepared to supplement my pension with an outrageous offer" Mauricio, Buenos Aires.

"Despite being permanently injured, I was still eligible for the Life Plan -year after year" Darren, Watford.

"Tottingham is for me doing it" Ossie, Swindon.

So don't sit there worrying about the future-RELAX-That phone will ring!! Spurs life plan is regulated by D Levy and his pals at the bank, and is funded by the 30,000 who have invested in the "THFC Season Ticket" pyramid scam over the last 10 years.

Xbox 2 Specifications

posted by mmChronic @ 9:28:00 AM

The Xbox 2 specifications have been announced cribbed from developers using development boxes and pretty tasty it sounds too. Most of the specification has been quite accurately speculated on various sites previously including this one.

So what's it got? 3 3.0Ghz PowerPC CPUs, next gen ATI chip set, 256Mb memory, optional hard drive, standard DVD drive (no proprietary or too expensive disc format - yay!), memory cards 64Mb - 1Gb and a USB camera.

The only bit really new there is the camera. EyeToy or video chat using Live anyone?

According to the second page:
Developers are being instructed to plan their games for high-definition. The baseline is 720p at 1280x720 for gameplay and video clips, 16:9 aspect ratio, 5.1 Surround Sound, and anti-aliasing. These features are the current minimum requirement.

It looks like we'll need that HDTV after all.

Part two of the article is yet to be released but it will reveal why ALL Xbox 2 games will be Live enabled.

Video Game BAFTAs!

posted by mmChronic @ 2:53:00 PM

Halo 2 got the BAFTA for Best Xbox game - surprise surprise. They are wrong though - Burnout 3 is a much better game than Halo 2 though Halo is still a very good game. Burnout 3 won best PS2 game, best racing game and best technical direction. Of course if you get the Xbox version you get smoother graphics, Live link up and customisable soundtracks too.

Half Life won 6 (count 'em!) awards (including best game all platforms, best PC game and best online game), best GC game was Prince of Persia and best sports game was PES4. Best handheld game was Colin McRae's Rally 2004 - and they were wrong again! On the GBA alone there were Mario and Luigi's Superstar Saga, Advance Wars 2, Zelda/Minish Cap and Mario Golf. If CMR on ANY of the handhelds available last year is better than any of those then Bunger's will eat his hat. Probably.

Last but definitely least has to be GTA:SA - not a single award mentioned in the BBC coverage. I'll still buy it in June though. :)

Hopefully a full list will appear on the BAFTA site soon. Pah who needs Oscars? ;)

Top of the BritBlogs

posted by mmChronic @ 7:55:00 AM

Mark over at BritBlog has been beavering away on a BritBlog chart and has got the linkage stuff sorted out. It's still in a testing phase but the more people taking the test the better the end product will be as it'll help Mark find the wrinkles and fix them. To be included in the charts, just sign in to your BritBlog account, get the new link button code and stick it on your site.

I've just replaced the link button that went straight to the English directory with the new chart one - you can still get to to directory side of things using the Newcastle icon next to it where you will find blogs from God's own country. Probably.

Daily Thomson Olympic Goatse Challenge Game

posted by mmChronic @ 9:35:00 AM

Cross Britain's best moustachioed decathlete with a slack arsed shock site and you get the Daily Thomson Olympic Goatse Challenge Game - their spelling not mine! NSFW.

It's a keybasher just like Daley Thompson's Decathlon (culprit behind several keyboard membrane replacements) but you have to stretch something instead of run or jump. :/

More goatse posts? What about another goatse game? Alternatively - WTF is goatse? All links SFW.

New Feature™ Guest Rant!!

posted by bungers @ 8:38:00 AM

My mate sent me this rant yesterday, so I thought I'd share it with you:

Don't know if any of you have been watching Jamie's school dinners on C4 recently, so a few scary facts:

The average allowance for a school dinner in the UK is 35-45p. That's the same price as a packet of crisps, and a third of what is spent on prison dinners.

15% of all children under 11 are obese, and are given a choice of chips, reconstituted meat and pizza for school dinners.

This evening on TV I saw children who couldn't tell a leek from a potato, thought an asparagus was an onion, ate tomato ketchup sandwiches (white bread of course) for lunch, and disturbingly, a girl who had in her lunchbox a kit kat, an aero and a packet of wotsits.

By the time I have kids going to school (pah! fat chance of that!) I would like them to have a choice of food that I would actually like them to eat. And here's where you come in. Please go to the website below and sign Jamie's petition to do something about the absolute crap that is served in school meals these days.

www.feedmebetter.com

I hope my nan doesn't watch the programme, she used to be a dinner lady and the shock of what they serve these days would probably give her a heart attack!

Well, until the next burning issue...

She won't mind. Watch out for more. If we get her started on George Bush, it'll be a daily feature!

The Cross In Space

posted by mmChronic @ 4:15:00 PM

It seems we are about to get a holy satellite in the skies above us in the very near future. Some mad Jeebusians who have been lugging a 12 foot cross around the world for the last thirty odd years are now going to cut a small cross from the large cross and launch it into space using an astral scatter your ashes company called Memorial Spaceflight.

How small is the small cross going to be? About 2.5 inches high - which makes these anim gifs ever so slightly out of scale.

Quibbles about scale aside, it looks like the Bible was telling the truth all along!
Then the Sign of the Son of Man will appear in the Sky! Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

British Blog Charts - Revisited. Again.

posted by mmChronic @ 12:18:00 PM

After setting up our very exclusive chart the other day I realised it wasn't very much fun without other people to beat. With the British Blog chart dead already and the Europundit chart insisting on Sitemeter stats it means we've got no one to laugh at! ;)

To that end (well that and the usual self interested link whorage reasons!) I was chatting with Mark from the BritBlog directory last night about the possibility of setting up a chart on his site counting the request for the BritBlog buttons from each site. The biggest problem with the British Blogs chart was someone had to physically collect all the different stats and chart them. For that very same reason I predict the Euro chart probably won't last much longer unless David Wemans happens to be a masochist or suffering from some form of OCD. If the latter magic mushrooms may help!

The advantage of doing it via BritBlog is that it could be done automatically. It would involve some overnight processing of the button request data - what form that processing would take is still being discussed but it would mean you wouldn't have to install another counter to be included. All you'd have to do is display a BritBlog button which most of the best British blogs do anyway. The other main advantage is that the exact same method of counting will be used for everybody. The method should be published so that people can pick holes / suggest improvements but more importantly to give an air of transparency to the whole thing. It should also cut down the bickering about the Britishness of some blogs (I bet the whingers were all Daily Mail readers!) as the Britishness criteria (whatever the fsck that is!) will be evaluated when the blog is submitted for listing on the BritBlog directory.

Mark seems quite excited by the idea - so much so he did a post about it on his own blog late last night. He's produced a preliminary top ten for the last few weeks but he hasn't used the data that would eventually be used for the 'proper' versions. As such take them with a pinch of salt. Hopefully we'll see a regulated inclusive British Blog Chart sometime soon.

EDIT: Check Mark's post for updates in the comments - it's ticking along nicely. :)

Spider-Man's Greatest Bible Stories

posted by mmChronic @ 10:02:00 AM

I might start believing in this God stuff after all - I've just found out the Bible is chock full of superheroes - for instance here's Spider-Man's Greatest Bible Stories which tells how Spidey was involved in many of the major stories in the Bible.

In fact the Jeebusian cult would never have got off the ground if it weren't for Spidey - for it was he who rolled away the stone from the mouth of Jesus' tomb thus helping start the resurrection story.

Espion Daily - Geordie Photo Blog

Here's a photoblog in Newcastle that shows daily photos taken with one of those Espion Minis - hence the name Espion Daily. He did a Newcastle sunset yesterday too - though I like ours better. ;)

The thing that really puzzles me is how he gets such decent pictures out of one of those Espion things? I posted a picture from one of those on here last year and it was OK. ish.

New Links' Fantasy Football League

posted by mmChronic @ 1:38:00 PM

I knew I should have written this yesterday while I was sitting at the top! Last night's Man City - Norwich game meant that everyone with Sean Wright-Phillips in their team (ie nearly everyone except me) got another 4 points today which means I relinquish my temporary hold on the top of the table.

So who is top? I'll let the table speak for itself - but I don't think we've seen the current leader in that position for quite a long time. Another shocker - Flip isn't glued to the bottom of the league!

Church Sign Generator Gets Legal Threat!

posted by mmChronic @ 11:46:00 AM

The Church Sign Generator we posted about last year has had a letter threatening legal action. Apparently some kid made a sign that said 'Uncle Bob worships here' - but Uncle Bob is an ex lawyer and Jewish. The latter fact made him take offence at being described as a Jeebusian. The former fact meant he then fired off an email threatening legal action against the Church Sign Generator site.

All I can add to that is he must have been a shiat lawyer!

Surf At Work

posted by mmChronic @ 9:25:00 AM

Yesterday I was surfing from my laptop at home whilst I was at work using Tight VNC over SSH (OpenSSH) and it worked quite well. There's a good tutorial on that here with links to all the required software but my advice is ignore the cygwin installation and go straight for the standalone Windows port of OpenSSH. The only problems I had with setting OpenSSH up was with crud left in my registry by cygwin - if you don't install cygwin the OpenSSH install works a treat.

The only problem is the awfully slow screen update. Today I'll be having a look at this article on "How to Bypass Most Firewall Restrictions and Access the Internet Privately" which should help me address that.

I've seen this one before and it was about setting up an encrypted proxy server at home, pointing your browser at that and encryping all your web surfing. So I went looking for this article to get some pointers as to which proxy software to use and how to set it up.

Well the article has been updated - and I don't have to do much more than I already have. The tutorial shows you how to set up connection forwarding without the need for a proxy server. The request is made by your browser at one end of the tunnel, it arrives on your machine at home and is forwarded to the relevant website. The data is received from the website, squirted down the tunnel at you and displays in your browser.
