iFrigate Could Blow Away iPod

posted by mmChronic @ 6:55:00 PM

I posted about toughening up your iPod the other day but the Royal Navy seem to have taken it to the extreme with the introduction of the iFrigate. Apple needn't surrender yet though - it's an interactive guide to a Type 23 Frigate. Yay for a Flash enabled Senior Service!

Monkeys Like Pr0n

posted by Merg @ 11:42:00 AM

Strange but true - monkeys will pay for monkey-pr0n:
A new study found that male monkeys will give up their juice rewards in order to ogle pictures of female monkey's bottoms. The way the experiment was set up, the act is akin to paying for the images, the researchers say.

The rhesus macaque monkeys also splurged on photos of top-dog counterparts, the high-ranking primates. Maybe that's like you or me buying People magazine.

The research, which will be detailed in the March issue of Current Biology, gets more interesting.

The scientists actually had to pay these guys, in the form of extra juice, to get them to look at images of lower-ranking monkeys.

VW Files Charges Over Suicide Bomber Ad

posted by mmChronic @ 10:14:00 AM

Looks like we may have been slightly off in our speculation over the real culprits behind the VW ad. We thought, because no charges had been filed, that it was the usual 'company lets bad taste viral out of back door, reaps publicity, denies responsibilty'. It seems Volkswagen are pressing charges against the 'unknown pair' behind it after all.

The two apologized for offending people but refused to identify themselves. Reuters noted that under German law, charges can be filed against unknown persons, obliging authorities to track down the perpetrators.

Presumably if the offenders are tracked down and then VW drop the charges then they (VW) will be charged with wasting police time so you have to think they mean to follow this through. This should be interesting.

But why are the media still claiming the perpetrators are unknown? You'd think that with the regularity that traditional media steals stuff off the net that they might have seen their names all over the place.

PSP Design Flaw "Deliberate"

posted by Merg @ 7:37:00 AM

Going for ludicrious statement of the week is Ken Kutaragi's claim that the square button responsiveness problems on the PSP "wasn't a mistake" and users will "have to adapt".

From what I've read, the problem stems from the sensor for the button not being directly below the button but slightly offset, due to the button being positioned so close to the LCD display -- with many claiming this is as a result of the PSP being rushed out to compete with Nintendo's new DS handheld.

Linking Illegal In Norway, too

posted by Merg @ 7:21:00 AM

Better be careful giving directions to lost people on the streets -- at least in Norway. That's the logic being used in the latest copyright ruling there, where a student who had a website with links to mp3 files -- that weren't hosted by him, on his site -- has been ordered to pay damages of 100,000 kroner (£8,000) to the Music Industry.

With this and yesterday's story from Germany, it seems that within the EU, be careful what you link to -- it just might get you jailed.

(German) Music Industry Says Linking Is Illegal

posted by Merg @ 9:08:00 PM

On Friday, German online magazine Heise.de recieved a letter from law firm, sent on behalf of various members of the music industry. The letter accuses Heise.de of variously violating the German copyright act and of spreading illegal "devices to get around anti-piracy measures".

How did they do this? They wrote an article which included links to SlySoft, makers of AnyDVD, CloneDVD and CloneCD products.
According to the music industry, simply providing a link to the start page of the web site of a copying software manufacturer constitutes a violation of this law. Furthermore, Heise Verlag is accused of having provided "instructions on how to get around anti-piracy measures" in the above news item. Finally, the letter even speaks of the news item as "illegal advertising" for the sale of the software.
Presumably by the same logic, telling someone their house locks are insecure merits being tried as a housebreaker...

Hey, it's better than the old mad-Sega-barber ("Give me a Cyber-razor cut!") ads... or, if you recall, the CD32 ad with the bloke from "The Darling Buds" on it and the wonderful quote, "and colours ... so many colours!" Tho' it's still not quite as 'adult' (or funny) as Sony's "Golfers Vs Porn Stars" ad -- or as good as the banned-from-TV Xbox "Life's Too Short" ad -- probably the best console ad ever IMHO.

Though Sega's "Germany" ad was pretty funny too in a satirical-xenophobia Sun-Reader-y way.

Fancy Directing "Toy Story 3"?

posted by Merg @ 9:55:00 AM

It seems the House of Mouse is having trouble retaining the services of someone suitable since their parting of ways with Pixar:
"My sources in the animation biz tell me that Disney, which will make Toy Story 3 without Pixar, cannot find a director to guide the project."

[...]

"Every single animator of note has turned down the director's job. They don't want to cross Pixar. They've become the only deal in town."

I'm sure my cohorts here at NL will gladly share the director's chair with me.

Though with Bungers on board, we might perhaps see the first ever animated pr0n feature from Disney. Still, it'd be better than most of their straight-to-video sequels...

School Bus Stories

posted by Merg @ 9:46:00 AM

Two stories, continents apart. First up, from land of ancient civilization, the European Cup, and blokes in skirts, Greece, is the pr0n fan bus driver:
"The driver said 'kids we've got porn, do you want to watch it'," one of the pupils told reporters. "Everyone started shouting yes, yes and he just put in a tape and we watched it on the small TV screens on the bus."

The children were aged 12 to 15.
And then, half a world away in the Good Ol' USA, we have the kids who decided to go to Nevada:
Three 11-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl tried to hijack a school bus Friday morning, Pennsylvania state police told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Whether it was for the shows or the gambling, or a quickie marriage, the story doesn't say.

That's the word from Nintendo.
We were informed that an online service for DS is definitely on the way, and that you'll be able to download/upload information as well as play games online. In addition, apparently at least two US and Japanese third-party developers have been trialling the DS online, and have even managed to get more than 16 DSs linked wirelessly at one time.
With Yesterday being the official European unveiling of Nintendo's latest handheld:
At launch in the UK, there will be a total of 15 games available for the Nintendo DS. The strong software launch line-up includes games such as Super Mario 64 DS, Polarium, WarioWare Touched! and Pokémon Dash from Nintendo, plus great titles from the world?s top Publishers such as Rayman DS (Ubisoft), Project Rub (SEGA), The URBZ: Sims in the City (EA) and Spider-Man 2 (Activision).

And:
The Nintendo DS will launch in the UK on 11 March 2005 at the estimated retail price of around £99. Software will be available at selected retailers at the estimated retail price of around £29 and £19, depending on the specific title.

Rodney Marsh Sacked For Tsunami Joke

posted by mmChronic @ 6:31:00 PM

Rodney Marsh has been sacked from Sky Sports after cracking the following joke.
The ex-Manchester City striker joked David Beckham had turned down a move to Newcastle United because of trouble with the "Toon Army in Asia".
I think the joke is in bad taste and he is an arsehole in general but sacking him? Wouldn't an apology and a hefty payment to charity have been enough? It's not as if Sky have high standards or something.

In other news Big Racialist Ron has been at it again.

First Nintendo DS Homebrew Demos

posted by Merg @ 4:32:00 PM

The Nintendo DS scene is definitely a lot slower to start than the GBA scene was. Unlike the GBA, the DS has some quite hefty protection though. Despite this, we're seeing the first homebrew demos here and here. Nothing startling, but as they say, it's a start.

Darkfader was the first to run some homebrew code on the DS, and he was also the first (and as far as I know, only) one to dump a DS ROM -- in this case the Metroid demo that ships with US DS consoles.

Last but not least, the DSLinux communitry are working on bringing the (in)famous GPL'd unix-a-like kernel to the DS -- which, with its touchscreen capability, could make a nifty Linux-based PDA, if that's what rings your bell. Although it's a rather slow one when compared to the PocketPC systems out there.

PS3 To Be Very Fast. Probably.

It has been leaked that the core processor for the PS3 will run at 4.6Ghz which sounds like it should be fairly nippy. Of course pure clock speeds aren't the be all and end all of speeds (I'm sure Merg will explain clock speeds and instruction widths and all the billion and one other things that make up a chip's speed it if you ask him nicely) so we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out the gen - this article speculates we will have all the info in February.

Dozen claim MS codec patents

posted by Merg @ 1:51:00 PM

Amusing and perhaps a little ironic, this:
The MPEG LA has had 12 separate companies claiming that they have essential patents in the pool it is developing for the licensing of Microsoft?s video codec, dubbed VC 1 under the SMPTE standard (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers).

The fact that 12 separate companies, possibly more, will decide the fate of the technology has implications for if and how much Microsoft must charge for the codec.
This is the CODEC that MS has been pushing for HDTV and "next generation DVD" (HDDVD and BluRay). It will be interesting to see where this goes...

Top 10 Most Violent Video Games

posted by Merg @ 11:35:00 AM

I missed this - it's dated 23 Nov 04 - but it just HAS to get a post, it's so damn' ludicrous:

1. Doom 3
2. Grand Theft Auto: ?San Andreas"
3. Gunslinger Girls 2
4. Half Life 2
5. Halo 2
6. Hitman: Blood Money
7. Manhunt
8. Mortal Kombat
9. Postal 2
10. Shadow Heart
Reading the rest of the article and their rantings about violence towards women and minorities being bad (but towards straight white guys is fine, I conclude) then we must assume that their problem with Doom is that Hell Spawn are a) a minority and b) female. That Gunslinger Girls 2 is a major problem in the US because, being a relatively obscure Japanese import title, it's done incredible well to make #3. I've no idea how they know what Hitman: Blood Money will be like, since it's not released for a few months yet. And I think the same arguments that applied to Doom apply to Halo 2 ('cept they're aliens rather than hell spawn. But *female* aliens, obviously).

Go read the whole thing if you want to pull it apart, a lot of it is majorly weak. I particularly like how they cite video games systems in bedrooms (meaning content can't be monitored, presumably) as a problem for the industry -- and not the parents who allow kids to have them there.

Isn't it the job parents to... you know.. um... parent?

GAH!

Ghostsites: The Museum of E-Failure

posted by Merg @ 10:12:00 PM

Fascinating:
WHAT IS THE MUSEUM OF E-FAILURE?
This feature of Ghost Sites was launched in early 2000; it is an image gallery of some 1,250 screens captured from some 900 Web projects that for various reasons "went dark" during the years 1998 to 2004. Some had a chance to post a self-penned epitaph in the form of a "farewell screen"; others simply expired and drifted lifelessly, with no visible indications for their demise - often for many months. This collection provides a partial, but revealing look at the latter half of the Web's 10 years of existence. Annotations (Web Elegies) are included where possible in order to place each site in its historical context.
Ah, the good old days, how I miss them...

Ford's New Car

posted by Merg @ 10:09:00 PM

It looks like Ford's expecting more urban degeneration to take place in the future if their new concept car's anything to go by -- it's an armoured car.
As the population shifts back to the big cities, you'll need a rolling urban command center. Enter the SYNUS concept vehicle, a mobile techno sanctuary sculpted in urban armor and inspired by the popular B-cars of congested international hotspots. Short and slim for easy city maneuvering, it looks bank-vault tough on the outside - with intimidating and outrageous styling that even features a vault-style spinner handle in back with deadbolt door latching. When parked and placed in secure mode, SYNUS deploys protective shutters over the windshield and side glass. Small windows on the flanks and roof are non-opening and bullet-resistant.
How friendly!

Skimpy Prom Dress Shocks Parents

posted by Merg @ 8:52:00 PM

From the land of guns'n'abstinence-only sex-ed:
A skimpy prom dress aimed at teenage girls has sparked outrage among US parents.

The racy red dress, which has just two straps that barely covers the wearer's chest, is being aimed at young girls through adverts in girls' magazines.

It is so revealing that some shops are insisting on getting parental permission slips before allowing girls to buy it.
[...]
But amazingly the £265 dress, which critics say turns girls "from a Prom princess to a porn queen", is one of the firm's best sellers.
In the interests of ascertaning the degeneracy of said item, and upholding our mission to ensure our readers are fully informed, I went looking for pix of said dress - try here, here and here for some of the variations of Style 376 (which I presume is the one causing the outrage -- all I did was look at their catalogue and guess...).

Dunno about you, but I think that dress will be less responsible for abstaining than... ah... staining - in the Monica Lewinsky sense. Ahem.

Calm Down Dear

posted by mmChronic @ 6:37:00 PM

Oh dear. We've had a mini rantette in the comments on the Calm Down Dear Esure Remix Video from the person who was originally hosting the video before the link died.

He's complaining the excessive bandwidth charges have cost him a fortune and he wasn't expecting them because it wasn't meant to be for public consumption. I don't know - you put a file on a public server on that there pesky internets and the bloody common oiks come and download it in the droves. How dare they? Birch them I say.

Alternatively he could always have put it on a password protected private server.

As for who let the 'secret' out he could try looking here - they may have generated a hit or 17 squillion.

Inexplicably he also seems to be claiming the rights to the 'Calm Down Dear' phrase and demands credit because he "created this madness". Well apart from esure for creating the commercial in the first place that is. And Josh (JAKAZiD) for remixing it into a very funny anim (RCSABB - 7.8Mb WMV on a site where the owner isn't whinging about bandwidth). So woos and props go out to Skuzzle for erm...umm... hosting a file he didn't want to share on a public server. Yay - a new innerweb star is born! Probably.

Originally objecting in December, the Poles original objections have continued to block software patents from being introduced to the EU. While this is a battle won rather than the war, it's an important step.

Sadly, our own Government's views differ:
Even the UK Government, one of the strongest supporters of the proposed text, admitted that "Clarity will only come from the first test case in a European court."
Gotta love that "we support it, even though we don't actually know what it means" line -- a clear admission that they support what they're told to by their corporate supporters, surely?

Sperm Wars

posted by mmChronic @ 7:14:00 PM

After Merg's post about the Great Sperm Race I remembered a documentary I watched the other night about a scientific theory called Sperm Wars. The documentary went a lot further than the linked document and had some mad jizz scientist who theorised that there were various types of sperm like blocker sperm that made it difficult for other sperm to get through and killer sperm that actively hunted and killed the sperm of another male.

So taking the idea of a sperm racing based TV show to it's natural conclusion I propose a series called Sperm Commanders. A bit like Time Commanders. With sperm. Naturally there'd be spin off series called Celebrity Sperm Commanders where we'd get famous people to donate a 'unit' or two.

I'm off to get funding from Channel 4. While you're waiting here's a sperm based shootemup in a Family Guy stylee.

Drivey - monochrome driving simulator

posted by mmChronic @ 9:31:00 AM

As I was giving a vigourous shocker to the woman who tried (unsuccessfully) to cut us up this morning in her Volvo estate on the road past St Nicholas' Cathedral I thought to myself that people really need educating on road skills.

So with marvellous serendipity what do I find on Waxy's this morning? That's right a driving simulator. It even has a 'Just As It Says On The Tin Name' - it's called Drivey. It's only in demo mode at the minute but it looks pretty cool not least for it's monochromatic graphics which the author freely admits are a throwback to 'classic' racing games like Night Driver. Right that's the driving skills sorted out - just need to link to a lesson in appropriate hand signals and NewLinks' job of educating nugget drivers is done.

More Firefox Gains

posted by Merg @ 9:44:00 PM

The research firm reported that Internet Explorer?s market shares have dropped by 1.5 percent to 90.3 percent, since December to Mid-January time frame. Mozilla?s Firefox gained 0.9 percent market shares to a full five percent. According to WebSideStory, IE?s market shares have been on a continuous decline since June of last year. Since then, Internet Explorer usage has dropped from 95.5 to 90.3, a 5.8 percent drop in almost seven months.

So, "just" 90% for IE. While I doubt MS is quaking just yet, it's the first significant changes in the browser market in a loooong time, I believe. Give IE's lack of recent updates and poor support for various standards, that can only be a good thing.

Toon Ultras

posted by mmChronic @ 8:59:00 PM

Another campaign is underway to bring the noise back to St James' Park and this one might just have a chance of success. The Toon Ultras want to set up a singing section at the back of Level 7 in the Leazes End right next to the away fans. This should be achievable as there are plenty of seats up there that aren't sold to season ticket holders so a good concentration of singing fans is definitely possible. They are also going to be producing flags and banners to hype it up some more. I just hope we don't end up with some continental style trumpet playing twat.

My season ticket is in the Gallowgate so I'm pretty much as far away from there as you can get which is a bit of a twat but tickets for cup games aren't included so I might just give that a go. Anyone fancy taking in the Coventry game in the Leazes?

According to this report a man has set a new standard in self-inflicted brutality by decapitating himself. He achieved this by tying a rope around his neck, the other end to a lamp post and then driving off in his car.

Of course we had a local suicide that decapitated himself - except this one had the panache to build a guillotine in his bedroom. Much more style than just ripping your head off. Pah!

Battle of the Planets

posted by bungers @ 12:46:00 PM

Call yourself a top 50? Any self respecting kid of the seventies worth his/her salt will know that there has been a glaring omission from that list!

Number #1 Glaring Omission : Princess from Battle of the Planets

Check it out! She was hot!

I've put more Battle of the Planets images over at the New Links Picture Dump including a saucy one of Princess for Flip (SFW) just incase you need more convincing.

But there's loads of interesting facts about Battle of the Planets. Lots of good ones can be found here, on the BBC site and at Absolute Anime.

F'rinstance...
  • Battle of the Planets was called Kagaku Ninja-Tai Gatchaman in it's original Japanese incarnation, which translated to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman
  • The annoying 7-Zark-7 & 1-Rover-1 were added by the Americans and didn't feature in the original Gatchaman

  • As much as ten minutes of the program was taken up by the prattling of 7-Zark-7 and his 'friends'.
  • Battle of the Planets had 85 TV episodes that were, effectively cut and pasted together from the 205 TV episodes of Gatchaman

  • 3 further Gatchaman OAV episodes were made in 1993
  • No one ever died in Battle of the Planets. When the programme was re-edited by Sandy Frank (who put over $5 million into production of this series), it was made clear that no-one was to die. So, during seemingly deadly attacks, 7-Zark-7 would add in reassuring comments. While it may look like a bunch of villains have had their throats removed by Mark's flying dart, 7-Zark-7's soothing tones will point out that "the sound of Mark's sonic boomerang caused slight, temporary concussions among the enemy - but they'll be up again shortly".

  • Casey Kasem provides the voice for Mark. He was also the voice behind Shaggy in Scooby Doo, and an American DJ.
  • Janet Waldo provided the sultry voice of Princess - and was also Josie in Josie and the Pussycats.

  • Keye Luke was the voice of Zoltar - he was Mr Wing, the mysterious shop owner in Gremlins.

Now if only ILN would make my BitTorrent work, he could have some Battle of the Planets Wallpapers..! ;)

After three.. G- Force!

more Gatchaman than you can shake a stick at here. Enjoy!

Wasn't that it's great hope last time around? It's a tiny little motherboard so I suppose there's no reason something like the iChav couldn't be released and be a very nice set top box indeed. Another golden oldie to play online. This time it's Qix.

If you don't know what Qix is, you play a little spaceship thingy which you steer around the board sklicing the play area up into sections. Whilst you are doing this there are various enemies floating around which you have to avoid or capture in one of the sections you've just created. Yet More On Technorati Tags

posted by mmChronic @ 9:39:00 AM

As you all know I think the new Technorati Tags are a fantastic idea - so fantastic I implemented the tagging code on our icons as quickly as possible.

However all is not well in the world of Technorati Tags - or at least not as far as NewLinks is concerned. Our success at getting into the tag pages has been patchy to say the least. We failed to get in with the first one but that was at least partially down to me as I forgot the rel tag. I say partially as the rel tag is now in but that particular post was updated fairly quickly and as far as I know still hasn't appeared in the blogging category yet. Bungers then published his weird sea creatures post and that got into the UglyAssFish category. Yay we were off!

This prompted me to soup up our icon code immediately to do the tags and by 9pm that evening it was implemented. The post to announce this included 4 tag icons. We got into Newcastle upon Tyne, NUFC and Lego but not Football. Curious.

However the most curious thing of all happened yesterday. ILuvNUFC posted here and on his site using the same icons - those for death, film, monkey, charver and robot. His post on his site appeared in all five categories - his post here got into none!

Now NewLinks isn't even appearing in categories it has appeared in previously! For instance I linked a post to the UglyAssFish category again - yet it still only contains Bungers' post.

We've had someone on here from Technorati saying there was a problem parsing some tags and I read on Dave Sifry's page last night that the problem extends as far as incorrect parsing of some tags from some blogs.
This is still beta software. It has bugs. There are kinks to be worked out, and missing features, too. For example, we still miss some tags here and there, especially for certain weblogs, due to some post detection issues.
I notice all his tags work correctly! ;)

It looks like NewLinks is amongst the "certain weblogs". I'm fairly sure it's not post detection issues as I ping Technorati (and many other web services after evry post) and Technorati are definitely aware of updates here as we appear in other people's Cosmos fairly quickly after we link to them. This is really frustrating - such a neat idea (and rapid implementation here) and we are being excluded! Hopefully the Technorati crew get the problem sorted quickly. Most importantly I hope they retrospectively scan older posts for the tag system so they aren't excluded forever.

As mentioned in previous posts feel free to use our icons with added tag goodness. They may not work on this blog but they might on yours!

EDIT: More of our posts are now starting to appear in various categories like this one. Hopefully the problem is solved and they are going through older posts now.

The first order I did for tickets was for the mosh pit and though the process said pressing this button will conclude the transaction I never got a confirmation email. I tried again a couple of hours later and could only order seated tickets and I did get a confirmation email that time. They are the tickets that have turned up today. I'm glad I tried again as the gig is now sold out.

Of course if the standing tickets turn up tomorrow then I'll be off to make a fortune as a ticket tout. ;)

The world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, was unveiled today in a elaborate ceremony in France, attended by European leaders including Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroeder.

A £100m redevelopment scheme has started at Heathrow airport to accommodate the new aircraft. A pier at Terminal 3 will be demolished to make more space for the massive wingspan of the plane. The first test flight of the A380 will take place in April although Airbus is keeping the exact date under wraps. The work at Heathrow needs to be completed by the end of 2005, in time for the first A380 to start operating at Heathrow in spring 2006.

The Commodore Pet

posted by mmChronic @ 11:22:00 AM

Comments in the retro gaming post yesterday made me start looking for emulators for the computer I learned to program on, the Commodore PET. I found one - w00t!

The VICE Emulator stands for Versatile Commodore Emulator and in addition to the PET it emulates VIC20, C64, C128 and Plus 4. I'll restrict this post to talking about the PET though. I will stick an Amiga icon the post though in a forlorn attempt to try and get into a tag section on Technorati!

in 1978/9ish (I was 11/12 ish) my school had a room which had a PET 3016 and a PET 3032. There were no computing lessons whatsoever - to use these machines you had to book time on them during your free time. To begin with I spent loads of time during lunch and after school playing games like Blitz, Nightmare Park, Dungeon and Super Glooper.

There was also another lad who wrote a very complicated (PARP!) program to calculate cricket averages for the school cricket team and he was the darling of various teachers including my geography teacher Mr Masterson (replete with houndstooth jacket, leather elbow patches and rusty Triumph Stag - you don't come any more stereotypical than that!) who hated me. He had a major rant one lunchtime as I sat playing some game or other saying game playing was banned unless you wrote it yourself.

The following week he came back in and ranted again at me for playing one of those 'guide your ship through ever narrowing tunnel games'. At this point I broke program execution, listed the code and showed him the bit saying 'written by me'. A couple of hrmphs and he walked out without a further a word. Sweet as fsck. Of course he hated me even more after that.

For some reason I never became the darling of teachers even though the various little games (including a game like the aforementioned Dungeon called Moria including skinny rock bridge with balrog episode) I wrote on the PET were all way more complicated than simply averaging a list of numbers. Ho Hum. I have however made quite a decent living out of coding so I guess I should be grateful to Masterson. I still think he's a cnut though. :)

PSP - Now you see it, Now you don't

posted by mmChronic @ 3:42:00 PM

Did everybody preorder their Sony PSP from Amazon via the NewLinks special offer? If not you've missed out as that page has been withdrawn. Spooky eh?

Engadget aren't speculating on the reason for it's disappearance as they don't live in the UK so it doesn't affect them. I do so I'm more than willing to speculate on it.

Is it because:
A) Sony went light when they found out that Amazon had revealed their secret plans to rip off the UK and ordered Amazon to withdraw the page on pain of getting no stock to sell.
or
B) Amazon made a mistake and pulled the page a soon as they realised what had happened.
C) We all imagined it.

I think I'll go for A.

Calm Down Dear Esure Remix Follow Up

posted by mmChronic @ 12:35:00 PM

We've had loads of hits for the Calm Down Dear Esure Remix video but atm Google has it still listed on the front page. The vast majority of people get to the front page and, find it's not there and leave. Well for those of you too stupid to understand what archives are for try here. It's worth persevering for as I've updated it to add a new source for the video as the original has gone - the version of the NewLinks front page cached in Google still has just the old dead link on.

Tsk tsk - these interwebs are getting full of very stupid and/or(delete as applicable) lazy people. And to think the web is supposed to be the idiot friendly front end to the internet. ;)

iBod - pr0n for your iPod

posted by bungers @ 11:18:00 AM

Now that mmChronic has given his Seal of Approval™ to the shuffle, and even toys with the iDea of an iMac mini, perhaps this will make him consider the iPod photo...

playboy has a rather nice collection of soft focus, beautiful lay-dees in various states of undress that you can download for free onto your computater and transfer to your iPod photo.

Download them here, now!

There are now two sets, each containing 25 photos which are about as smutty as the one on the left, so you could show them all to your granny without causing much offence.

More Technorati Tags

posted by mmChronic @ 10:46:00 AM

As mentioned the other day I've updated the icons to do the tag code too. I've now set the categories on all the icons so any icon you now add to a post will automatically link to a tag page.

To see which category an icon is for hover your mouse over the icon and it the category will display in a tooltip. Note that only applies if you are using Firefox (and if you're not you should be) as IE displays the alt text rather than the title which is where I've stuffed the category info.

If anyone has any better suggestions for the actual categories let me know. Anyone else reading this feel free to nick the icons for your own posts on your own site - it's an easy way to add a technorati tag to a post with a click and a bit of cut and paste. After all as the interweb's premier cheapskates we are of course not paying for the image bandwidth. Yay! :)

NewLinks Gets Categories.

posted by mmChronic @ 8:56:00 PM

Sort of.

After posting about the new Technorati Tags thingummy earlier today I decided I liked it but knew our lazy very busy posters would never get around to, or quickly tire of, puting the tag links in the code by hand. Well fear not - I've saved you the job.

Our icon code generator already generates the html for icons with a single click. I've now extended the code on that page so that it creates the tag link for you. The code is finished but I need to add a title attribute to the images with a category name. This will be a gradual process as and when. Any new icons added will get entered with the category name so all new icons will already work. Any old icons without the title set will just work as normal - ie no link to a category. Talking of new icons I'll close the icon poll sometime this weekend - I've been busy. :)

I've set the title attribute on a few icons already so you can see what they do. Click on the ones below to see the category link in action.

My earlier post about tags hasn't appeared in the Blogging category yet but Bungers' Ugly Ass Fish post has appeared. However I've just realised that I'd left the rel attribute out so no wonder it hadn't appeared. Doh! Before I realised that I'd screwed up I'd emailed Technorati support about it and someone called Dave from Technorati (Dave? Technorati? Dave Sifry? Probably a coincidence but you never know!) left a comment saying they had a bug in the parsing of some tagnames. Hopefully I haven't confused the issue. Sorry.

I've just read on BoingBoing that someone called Matt has written a bookmarklet to generate the tag code for you - just type in the tagname into a text box and it generates the code for you to paste so you may want to give that a try. I'm happy with my no typing at all method. ;)

Ramble finished - I'm off to ping and test our added Technorati Taggage goodness.

Blogger Gets Categories

posted by mmChronic @ 10:41:00 AM

Category:

Sort of.

Technorati have launched Technorati Tags which allows you to link to a tag page in your post and the post will appear on Technorati's page for that tag. As well as blog posts the Technorati page will show Flickr images & links from Del.icio.us with matching tags. If you use blog software that support categories you will appear on the tag page automatically. If you use Blogger then you will have to insert links manually into the post.

The extra link you put in your page looks like this
<a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/tagname" rel="tag">tagname</a>

Just replace the tagname with the category of your choice. I don't know if you can make your own categories up or just use the available ones. It'd also be nice to be able to look at a tag page for a given blog so say you could look at NewLinks' Lego posts for example. I'll have a play with that today.

So do we like? If we do I could either write a similar bit of code to the icon generator which would generate the tag code for you or we could assign the icons to categories, change the icon code slightly and when you add an icon the tag code is automatically wrapped around it.

via boing boing.

EDIT: See here for an easy way of adding tags to your blog. Feel free to use our icons with added tag code.

Sony's Turn To Rip UK

posted by mmChronic @ 9:28:00 AM

As Bungers posted the other day the Sony PSP has a UK launch date and is available for preorder. Yay?

No not quite. Sony had apparently stated that the PSP would be below $200 in every market place. With almost $2 the the pound that's about £100 - where the fsck does £179 (approx $360!) come from? They must have forgotten to mention that the UK was going to be overcharged yet again. Either that or we have gotten so used to being swindled that we were expected to know that 'every market' meant every market except the UK. Maybe Amazon has the price wrong - but I suspect they haven't.

I'm off to live in a country that hasn't got 'Rip us off we are suckers' tattooed on it's forehead.

Sony Helps Fund Xbox 2 Development

posted by mmChronic @ 4:34:00 PM

Sort of.

A couple of years ago both Microsoft and Sony were taken to court by a company called Immersion because they had infringed Immersion's patents which they held for force feedback technology. Microsoft decided to settle out of court and that led to Microsoft investing in the company, ending up with a 10% stake in it.

Sony however decided to fight the case. Fools. They just lost - and a portion of the fines and subsequent licencing fees will of course ultimately end up in Microsoft coffers.

iGrill is a 600Mhz Mini-ITX motherboard, an 80GB hard drive, and a 250W PSU, running Gentoo Linux, all enclosed in a George Foreman grill. Technically it's lost the grilling-functionality, but with a bit of tin foil on top of the heatsink and a fork-bomb, I reckon I could probably still fry an egg with it.

Bling Devalues Gold

posted by mmChronic @ 9:58:00 AM

It's been mentioned on here before that Burberry has been devalued and it's now being rumoured (well I read it on popbitch anyway) to be dropping all products that shell suited, baseball capped, Ace Lager (another NewLinks number 1!) drinking dregs of society can afford to attempt to revive their 'exclusivity'. Too late for them though with faux Burberry being the chavs' material of choice - it looks like Burberry and is almost as cheap as stealing it.

Now apparently gold is going the way of Burberry. It is no longer seen as exclusive enough for rich people to own as the charvers have made it their own through their overuse of large, dangly 9ct clown earrings and sovereigns St. George Medallion Rings.

New Links, as a service to all our rich readers, will take any unwanted, tacky bullion off your hands - free of charge. We'll even collect.

This doesn't bode well for Apple and the new cheap headless iMac or Mac Mini - snobs will have to find a new hardware manufacturer to worship once the iChav is released as they will find themselves jostling for elbow room with the unemployed next time they are at the Apple store.
I'll have an iChav please

Sony PSP only £179.99 via NewLinks

posted by bungers @ 1:46:00 PM

coverYep that's right, on March the 18th you can take delivery of a shiny new Sony PSP for only £179.99

I think you should order it with a copy of the new GTA game, more news about that can be found here. We're off back to Liberty City again, but will it be CJ, or Tommy putting in an appearance?
this GTA is no mere rehash but a completely fresh game. What's more, according to Rockstar, both games are "expected to be available near the launch of the PSP handheld system in North America and Europe". With PSP due to hit the UK in March, GTA PSP could be as little as two months away from release.

mmChronic seems to have another alias, as he's already very kindly reviewed the PSP for amazon, in a post entitled Get a DS. Sony is the enemy...
Please don't buy this pathetic excuse for a handheld console. The DS is by Nintendo and therefore has Nintendo games on it. This makes it better than this peice of Sony. If you want to watch DVD's, buy a DVD player. Oh sorry, this is portable so you can watch films whilst walking down Oxford Street, for example. Of course you won't be able to see the end of a film, and if you do, you wont be able to play games on the tube home, although with the quality of PS2 games, that's probably a good thing.

The results are in for the Yahizzle! Top Ten Finds of the Year awards, and guess what? We won got nuddin'!! Fuskers.

Oh well, nevermind. There's always still the bloggies and there's always next year I suppose.

Anyway, to save you the hassle of trawling through all ten awards, the only really interesting one for us newlinkers is Derelict London.com.

Contains...
...banksy graffiti...
...some tunnels......and some toilets.

That last one is for Dan. Welcome back.

Oh, and if you're wondering where the Victoria Tunnel Report is, it's being done, I'm just making sure it's compatible with my new Sony PSP...

One for the laydees

posted by mmChronic @ 12:20:00 PM

Do you ever wish you could write your name in the snow but find squatting doesn't give you very good control over your aim? Then you need a Magic Cone which is a Disposable Urination Funnel which allows the laydees to aim at stuff. Check it out - you don't know the fun you've been missing out on while you've been sitting on the toilet.

Free Screen Cleaner

posted by mmChronic @ 11:25:00 AM

Do you have trouble reading your screen due to it's dirtiness? Are you suffering from headaches brought on by squinting at almost illegible text?

Most people don't realise that the inside of a monitor screen gets just as dirty as the outside. When people give their screens a clean they are in fact only doing half the job. In no time at all the build up of dirt and dust inside your monitor will make it very hard to read. New Links may have the answer. Try this free screen cleaner which will clean the inside of your monitor for you and save yourself all those headaches.

BTW the U2 Vertigo post the other day? It was a 'Misheard Lyrics' animation.

Urban Freeflow

posted by mmChronic @ 8:19:00 AM

I'm sure you all recall an ident segment on BBC(?) with a bloke running around the tops of buildings, jumping across gaps and down stairs. That is parkour or free running. There was a documentary about it on C4 last week but I missed it but there is a repeat and a 'making of' on E4 this week - I'll post details if I see any.

Though the sport started in France there is a UK based parkour website called Urban Freeflow with reviews of good spots to practice some jumping about - including several in Newcastle and Gateshead such as the City Library, Civic Centre and the Baltic Flour Mills Superduper Art Gallery on the Quayside.

After reading the reviews though I can't help thinking to myself we used to do all that (and more) when we were 11 in the Geordie sport of double duffing (daring) in all the listed spots and many more including Byker Metro station when they were building it. It seems we missed the bit where it changed from kids mucking about to be an urban extreme sport.

I'm pleased to announce the formation of the New Links' Synchronised Parkour team. I'll be the one mostly holding the carrier bag with the drinks in. We're off to the Sage.

EDIT: Jump Britain is repeated on E4 at 8pm on Saturday, followed by 'The Making Of' at 9pm.

Brilliant Button Maker

posted by mmChronic @ 7:35:00 PM

The Brilliant Button Maker is yet another 80x15 button generator but this one allows you to do skinny buttons with graphics on. The previous one I posted was text only but a lot of the buttons I did for the sidebar I had to do in Paint Shop Pro as I did some with little graphics. Now it'll be easier to do any new ones - not that I'm planning on doing any. It's someone else's turn.

U2 - Vertigo - WTF!?!

posted by mmChronic @ 3:02:00 PM

Not having any sound here it's hard to figure out wtf this one is about! But the latest post over at Rob Manuel's blog is called U2 - Vertigo and features Bono singing and disembodied heads of Clare Short, Jasper Carrot, Archracialist Kilroy-Silk and various other brummies over pictures of Birmingham.

If I had speakers here I might be able to figure it out but as it is I guess we'll just have to wait for the b3ta newsletter for the explanation!

FURB Apple

posted by mmChronic @ 1:58:00 PM

After news that Apple is suing Think Secret comes the news that Apple is being sued under US antitrust laws. The basis of the case is that once you buy music from iTunes you can't then listen to it on a non Apple portable player ie Apple have tied you to the iPod. This is of course not even considering the fact that Apple also try to prevent you playing other providers' music on the iPod too. Oh and they rip off the UK too.

So how come everyone portrays M$ as a greedy corporation yet Apple seems to sidestep such accusations even though they are evidently just as greedy as any other corporation? Still we can forget all about Apple if this one ever comes off.

New Links Fantasy Football

posted by mmChronic @ 10:30:00 AM

It seems month 4 of the New Links Fantasy Football League is over even though it runs until 12th January. As ILuvNUFC pointed out there are no more Premier league games between now and then so the scores won't change. ILuvNUFC was the runaway winner this month with Merg just slipping into second place at the last minute. I'll not bother mentioning the also rans. ;)

Final table:
  1. ILuvNUFC 78
  2. Merg 56
  3. mmChronic 54
  4. Dogs 44
  5. Bungers 43
  6. Flip 39

The best 3 month table has also changed. Merg has taken my place at the top and ILuvNUFC has stormed into 3rd place on the back of his performance this month.

If anyone else would like to join our League sign up at the BBC and send us your pin before the start of the next game month on 17th January.

Apple Sues Over Headless iMac Story

posted by mmChronic @ 8:18:00 AM

Apple are suing Think Secret who broke the headless iMac story the other day. This seems to confirm the rumours as Apple are suing because the post contained Apple trade secrets and they also want to know who did the leaking. At this juncture I'd like to point out that it was Merg who posted the story on here and not me. ;)

So cheapo Macs on sale at Walmarts next to the 'value' dog food and rifle ammunition soon? All you Mac types had better get used to your new not quite as trendy userbase. If this makes you recoil in disgust and dump all your Apple products we will be more than happy to take your iPods off your hands.

Swearing In Disney Game?

posted by mmChronic @ 9:01:00 AM

A North Tyneside man has complained there was a swear word in the copy of Monsters Inc for the GBA he'd bought for his kids. Of course the fsckwit actually bought a pirate cart and is complaining about the phrase FOAD in the crackers' intro (screenshots and discussion). Parp!

Anyway what's he doing buying his kids a GBA SP for this Christmas? Doesn't he know the DS is available on Tyneside right now and was for weeks before Christmas? Cheapskate.
