AOL Just Got Even Crapper

AOL, who are already famous for ad laden, sluggish services with all the speed and flexibilty of a dead dog are going to pull a service that every other ISP gives you - access to UseNet. If you're based in the UK you shouldn't use AOL anyway - they are defrauding you (or your country anyway) of millions in pounds in taxes.

AOL also don't allow protocols other than TCP/UDP last time I checked -- their client tunnels both to their servers, but nothing else. So VPN software, etc. won't work.

BTW, re tax -- for that reason one also shouldn't pay for The Sun, Sky TV or anything else from Murdoch. Not to mention it's also vile propaganda to further Murdoch's own ends.

The Sun are excluded from VAT because they are allegedly content providers as is any magazine, newspaper, TV station or evil global propaganda machine.

AOL claim to be a content provider rather than a comms provider - yet their main business is providing comms so should have to pay VAT just like every other ISP operating in Britain. The gubmint shoudl force them to operate separately in this country. Let the cotent provision side stay VAT free and start charging VAT on ISP services - this country would make loads more in tax. Greeedy Amerkin fsckers.

Yeah, but it's still income made in the UK that he pays no tax on because it's registered abroad, IIRC.

Either way, giving money to Murdoch is bad, period, IMHO.

oh, and Re: AOL ... surely if they provide both content and service they should either be paying VAT on whatever part of the fee pays for the service costs, or for the entire fee?

It *IS* a service.. without it, you couldn't access their content. And AOL these days advertise themselves as a broadband service -- check out their claims vs BT in their TV ads.

You don't have to convince me on AOL - why Customs and Excise seem to be taking their crappy excuse is beyond me.

Re the Sun tax - yeah that's corporation tax etc - I'd forgotten about their tax evasion on that one. I was purely on about VAT.

I try to avoid paying for Sky services whenever I can - I've successfully avoided paying for Sky Sports yet seem to have full access to it in my house. How the fsck did that happen. ;)

Re: The Sun -- that's the one. And that's BS. Money earned here should be taxed here, IMHO.

As for Sky Sports... um... the Sky Sports Fairy?

I think we should have done with it for ever more. Hang Murdoch and dissolve News International. Which will of course be replaced by the New Links Media Group. Probably.

Sounds good to me.

Never happen though... Murdoch and Tony are "pals", apparently.

I think it's a case of "you keep giving me tax breaks and keep OFCOM off my back and I won't destory you through the power of media" type arrangement.

That's a very cynical view to hold. As you should know cynicism has no place on NewLinks! ;)

... and presumably, in the same vein, neither has sarcasm?

We can't do that - I wouldn't be able to post anything ever again! ;)
