Toss The Cheerleader

posted by mmChronic @ 12:42:00 PM

This site has a video clip of a cheerleader being used to score a basket - amazing clip but notice the way she holds her neck whilst the the throwers are celebrating. Looks rather painful.

And if you fancy a go yourself they even have a little Flash game where you can try and toss the cheerleader yourself. Oooer!

New Links mini version: We may have been beaten - but we were fscking awesome and very unlucky to lose to a spawny deflected goal. I though this was a site to prevent you from going blind but I was wrong.
It made me feel accountable for my pulling because I knew I would have to go on and report my episode, thus causing me to pull less
It's to help people who pull their own hair (and sometimes eat it) due to a condition called trichotillomania. Mad fsckers.

Now all we need is a link to the woman who had the massive hairball removed from her gut - if that doesn't put them off nothing will. New Links - proponents of the short, sharp shock.

New Year's Resolutions 2005

posted by mmChronic @ 9:22:00 AM

I resolved years ago to never make New Year's Resolutions ever again as they are invariably broken by January 3rd. But I'm breaking that one just like all the ones that went before. I have however got a very good reason - it's for the purpose of link whorage from Technorati!

They have a New Year's Resolutions 2005 page and if you post your resolution and link to that page then you will see your link there. So here's a couple of resolutions for New Links this year.
  1. Threaten Bungers with knives when something is due/overdue
  2. Move to a paid for blog with extra features - I think we've pushed the free envelope as far as possible with this site! More news on that in the early new year. This will of course mean taking adverts for crotchless knickers and dog food etc to pay the bills.
  3. Can't think of anything else as we are the bestest blog in the world already. Probably.
Any more? Stick them in the comments.

PS Talking of link whorage - how come not one of our myriad of avid readers has nominated us for this? Pah! I don't know - we skive work all day to bring you top linkage and for what? Nothing it seems. I'm off to work for the Guardian.

Cheap Mac

posted by Merg @ 11:37:00 PM

Courtesy of Think Secret, rumours of a new Barebones Mac, sans display, for the sub-$500 price-point -- that's ~£270 in "real money".

Amusingly, this is the market I've long been told by the "Mac faithful" that Apple wanted no part of, because it was "cheap and nasty" (not to mention the snob value and "you get what you pay for" type comments).

It should be interesting to see how this sells, given the number of people who like MacOS X but have thus far refused to pay the high "Mac tax" type prices. Personally, I think it could be a good move, if only as a "foot in the door" -- get people to try a low-end box and upgrade to a faster more expensive box later on, though of course that would likely mean these "barebones" machines will have very limited expansion capability.

Expect a new rant from me when it's launched in the UK at £499 ;)

Stop Blogging And Go Outside

posted by mmChronic @ 9:48:00 AM

The BBC has a little mini review of the year including the question 'Was this the year of the blog?'. Their conclusion? Not really.

They thought blogs served a useful purpose in countries with little freedom of expression and the rest of the article is mainly about bloggers selling out and become part of the media 'they despise'. Whores. I would like to point out at this juncture that any income I derive from my gardening column in the Newcastle Herald and Post is entirely unrelated. Probably.

Oh and we're all lazy buggers apparently.
In any case, as bloggers rarely go out and about, many of those who comment on the world at large get their information from mainstream news sources.

Phew - that's a bit of a sweeping generalisation from the beeb. I'm off for a lie down.

The New Links Fantasy Football League has been updated with the Christmas games. ILuvNUFC has cemented his palace at the top and is now 8 points ahead of the rest of the pack. Special mention to Flip's team as he has obviously been feeding John Arne Riise a cocktail of cocaine, viagra and steroids. Probably.

Bungers now finds himself in the position of holding up the table at Christmas. This of course means he will be mostly playing in the 2nd Division 1st Division Championship league next season. Parp!

Table is as follows:
  1. ILuvNUFC 49
  2. mmChronic 41
  3. Merg 34
  4. Dogs 31
  5. Flip 29
  6. Bungers 21

Thank You, Poland

posted by mmChronic @ 11:52:00 AM

Thank you, Poland - and it's not for being part of America's truly international police force. It's for at least delaying the implementation of software patents in the EU. Yay!

Laws like this will only benefit the large corporations like Microsoft and IBM who will spend yet more lawyer dollars chasing programmers who they claim have infringed their patents. Of course any benefit is short term only as all new software innovation will be put to death by ninja lawyers - or at least smaller companies not being able to contest IBM's assertions they've infringed copyright.

The linked site is a chance to say thank you to the Polish Undersecretary of State for blocking the implementation of the Software Patent Directive. Hopefully if enough people express gratitude the EU may have a rethink. Probably not though as the law has been steamrollered through the EU Parliament despite overwhelming objections from all quarters. Only the corporations (and their lobbyists) have an interest in it's enactment.

Why are the pretty ones always insane? - Chief Clancy Wiggum

There comes a time in most relationships that one of the two parties wants to end it - and about that time all hell breaks loose. This is a great example of that hell breaking loose.

As the story goes, I dated this older woman for about 8 months. We were pretty serious but had some communication issues. Well, as you'll see, she had no problem communicating her feelings.

Its hard enough getting over someone. When she leaves you in excess of 50 psychotic voicemails, it makes it even harder. So, lets have some fun getting over her by starting a web site. I hope you enjoy my personal pain as much as my friends have. All these voice mails are real. She left them on my cell phone. The times and dates are correct. She didn't even give me time to listen to some of the messages before she called back with another psychotic one!

Please share them with your friends. And above all else, let this be a lesson to you - run, don't walk, from a psychotic woman.

Cat Food Uncovered
In some places, ground-up cats and dogs can end up in pet food. Sanimal of Quebec, Canada mostly process pig and chicken, but rendered approx 18,200 kg of cat and dog flesh each week.
Later on in the article you'll discover that by increasing the quantity of vegetable matter in dog food, manufacturers of pet food have been responsible for the greatest mystery known today...
the characteristic white dog turds of yesteryear are rarely found; they were caused by weathering of dog excrement rich in bone meal.

Season's Greetz Fly Out To...

posted by mmChronic @ 9:07:00 AM

If you've played around with computers long enough you know what chip tunes are. Before we all had 6 squillion channel sound cards most consoles and computers had a chip or two for producing sound. Talented musicians learnt how to screw the maximum out of these with some amazing music in a style that became known as chip tunes. These tunes didn't use samples but played notes with various effects programmed in.

So what's that got to do with anything? How about a free album of Christmas tunes in a scene stylee (hence the title of this post) with the tunes performed on a variety of old computers and consoles including several I've owned.

Downhill Battle Sends Gifts to RIAA/MPAA

I can't say it any better than ZDNet does:
As the holiday season approaches, some opponents of the movie and music industries' legal efforts are planning to celebrate in a Grinch-like fashion.

Hit Maps

I added a cool new thing to the sidebar yesterday but I've waited until now to post about it as it takes 24 hours to update. It's now updated so check out the map thing in 'You Came From' section. That is a map of where our visitors are coming from.

Hit Maps was developed for Climateprediction.net (a SETI@HOME style project for weather prediction) but they've allowed it to be used like this too. They record the page loads and IP addresses then once every 24 hours they translate the IP addresses to physical coordinates. Once the info has been collated it is plotted on the world map - the larger the dot the more visits from that area. You can click on the map to get a zoomed in version which can be clicked on again to zoom in even further.

via loads of the blogs I visit - I can't remember where I saw it first. Sorry!

The Long Tail

posted by mmChronic @ 9:32:00 AM

Boingboing had a piece the other day about a Long Tail blog which had been launched to help prepare and research a book of the same title. The interesting thing about it is the original article in Wired which will be the basis for the book. I'm glad he's launched the blog or I would have missed the original piece entirely.

The Long Tail is about the marketing of digital media via the interweb with all the added sales that automatic recommendations and unlimited stock bring. It seems huge amounts of money is made from stock that will never be stocked by a shop based retailer due to stocking limitations / limited demand / whatever. Low demand is still demand - an MP3 / ebook / old game / whatever takes up a tiny amount of disk space so the online retailer can potentially afford to keep everything ever thus being able to satisfy every customer. It's quite a long article but is definitely worth a read as it covers a lot of the points we made about virtual sales the other day. It goes much further (which is why he is writing a book and we just write a whingy blog!) and explores how revenue can be increased massively yet prices to the consumer would also be lowered - result for both sides. Makes sense to me. I hope the music companies are listening.

First Dump Of DS Rom

The very first ROM for the DS has been dumped. Someone called DarkFader has dumped Metroid. He hasn't released the ROM into the wild but listed the directory listing in a thread as proof.

The dumping of the ROM isn't just good news for pirates - it's good news for people who want to develop on them. By disassembling the contents of the ROM it will be possible to figure out how certain things work and this info will be dumped in the public domain.

The actual thread announcing the dump is at gbadev.org which I can highly recommend visiting if you are even half interested in console coding. I found a lot of tools and info on GBA programming there. I suspect I may be spending some more time there in teh near future. Now where can I get a Nintendo DS in Newcastle?

Looks like Bush is refusing to talk to the American people now. Or at least I think that's what he meant:
"Now, the temptation is going to be, by well-meaning people such as yourself and others here, as we run up to the issue, to get me to negotiate with myself in public," Bush told the questioner on Monday. "To say, you know, "What's this mean, Mr. President? What's that mean?

"I'm not going to do that. I don't get to write the law. I'll propose a solution at the appropriate time," Bush said.
So, I guess it's now inappropriate for Americans to ask questions of their own president ...?

More RIAA Law Suits

posted by Merg @ 5:45:00 PM

Another 754 "lucky" people are being sued for copyright infringement courtesy of the RIAA.
The Recording Industry Association of America has now sued more than 7,000 people for distributing its songs over "peer to peer" networks like eDonkey and Kazaa, in an effort to discourage the online song copying that it believes has cut into CD sales.
Despite more than a year of headline-grabbing lawsuits, peer-to-peer use has not declined. An average of 7.5 million users were logged on to peer-to-peer networks in November 2004, up from 4.4 million in November 2003, according to the research firm BigChampagne.
So, that strategy's working well then.

Dragon Tattooed Cock

posted by mmChronic @ 11:26:00 AM

This is either a very good photoshop or the most painful tattoo ever.

The linked page has pictures of a dragon tattoo which covers the bloke's stomach and the head and neck of the dragon are tattooed along the full length of his penis. The penis is fully tattooed - I can't even begin to imagine the pain that the tattooing of the dragon's face caused! Did I mention this is NSFW?

Do I Need A Jacket?

posted by mmChronic @ 11:45:00 AM

The "Do I Need A Jacket?" site allows you to enter a city name, checks the temperature with the local airport's weather data and informs you whether you need a jacket to go outside. Unfortunately the temperature thresholds seem to have been set by wusses - the result for Newcastle can be found here and the advice is wear a jacket yet it's a glorious day outside. Hopefully our resident snapper will take a picture out of his window and post it for everyone to see.

Oh and if you're a mackem - don't bother. You don't live in a proper city and you don't have an airport! PARP!

Showing Off 2004

posted by mmChronic @ 11:24:00 AM

It's that time of year when people decorate their houses with lights and decorations to celebrate Christmas. The more enthusiastic ones extend the decorations to the outside of the house. There's plenty of those in the area I live (the most notable being the houses beside the Water Board in Byker) but none come up to the standard / plumb the depths like these ones.

No wonder America won't sign the Kyoto agreement - they would have to outlaw these massive displays!

Apple Dis-Harmony?

posted by Merg @ 7:21:00 AM

DRM is just a way to keep the honest people honest, right? To stop people infringing copyright?

Well, RealNetworks online music store Harmony which sells iPod DRM-compatible tunes would disagree, I suspect.
Apple Computer has quietly updated its iPod software so that songs purchased from RealNetworks' online music store will no longer play on some of the Mac maker's popular MP3 players.

The move could render tunes purchased by many iPod owners unplayable on their music players.

Just to get this straight: Apple has deliberately stopped their own customers -- that is, people who bought iPods (since we presume those who stole them don't pay for music) -- from playing legally electronically purchased (but DRM-encumbered) music on their iPods because it was bought from a source other than iTunes.

I guess DRM's really about corporate control and locking consumers into one company after all... how... Microsoftian of Apple. (And, ironically, Media Player 10 offers the user a choice of "Online stores" including but not limited to Microsoft's own... though one assumes they all pay license fees to the Great Cthulu of Computing, so it's not quite... ahem... Apples to oranges).

I guess iPod owners who want more choice will just have to go back to infringing copyright...

Feds Bust Xbox Pirates

posted by mmChronic @ 10:01:00 AM

At first glance this seems like an over zealous bust for selling modded Xboxes (which I know is illegal under the DMCA but surely they have terruhists to catch instead?) but it seems the places raided had went one step further.

As well as modding the Xboxes with mod chips and bigger hard drives the shops were installing ripped games on the Xbox hard drive and displaying them as bundles in store! One customer even went in asking about the availability of a Gameboy cart and was shown it on the Xbox along with lots of of other carts.

Regular readers will know Iwe (well except for Dogs but he's just a hypocrite!) don't give a monkey's about piracy of games / music / films / whatever (see this and this amongst others) due to it being payback for years of ripping off from the other direction - I certainly buy more digital media than the average person so that's enough to salve my conscience. I don't however agree with people making money from piracy. Hopefully they'll be getting taste of this soon. Remember kids - don't buy your warez at a car boot sale - download them yourself.

Audioscrobbler

posted by mmChronic @ 10:23:00 AM

We've talked about having a 'Now Playing' type thing for a while so you can see how bad / good our taste in music is. With Audioscrobbler we can do that and a whole lot more. They provide plugins for various media players which report back what you are playing. Eventually it will have records of your favourite artists and tracks. These can then be displayed via RSS or used to find similar music (by comparing your details against other peoples. It even has access to a personalised radio station LastFM which, taking note of what you like, chooses tracks accordingly.

After a bit of fscking about with the keychain doobries on the imacopod on my desk I now have the iTunes plug in installed and my data can be seen here. Of course it now means I've got to fix all the track names where they imported into iTunes incorrectly (eg one punk compilation has the artist / title switched) and delete all the really dodgy shite that you always find lurking on compilations as Audioscrobbler seems to count even a skipped track.

The Phrontistery

posted by mmChronic @ 10:03:00 AM

Seeking to improve the education of our readership and the interweb's populace in general has always been a primary aim of New Links. Today's slice of knowledge is provided by the Phrontistery which is a collection of obscure words and vocabulary resources. Includes etymologies, themed glossaries (like styles of speech and colour terms), and lost words amongst many other things. That'll larn ye.

Eastenders 1917 Stylee

posted by mmChronic @ 10:18:00 AM

It seems somebody has unearthed some archive footage of Eastenders which was filmed in 1917 and is therefore grainy, black and white and silent. Obviously a silent Eastenders (4.6Mb wmb RCSABB) has the massive advantage of not being able to hear any whiny cockney accents. Yay.

Oh and it features someone 'getting into' a chickenturkey as promised.

New Links: November 2004 Icon Compo

posted by mmChronic @ 12:08:00 PM

I've posted the November 2004 icon compo here so as to prevent pesky pop ups on the front page. The release of Firefox I'm running (RC1) is blocking them ok but the last one wasn't.

I'll close the poll at 5pm (GMT) on Friday, 10th December.

How White Trash Are You?

posted by mmChronic @ 3:57:00 PM

Again returning to a popular theme of rednecks / charvers (we know what keeps attracting the punters!) New Links presents the White Trash quiz - and here are my results:
I AM 20% WHITE TRASH!

20% WHITE TRASH
I, my friend, have class. I am so not white trash. I am more than likely Democrat, and my place is neat, and there is a good chance I may never drink wine from a box.

Cop A Feel Of Man Boobies

posted by mmChronic @ 2:46:00 PM

Today we make yet another return to a very popular subject on New Links, that of man breasts. The amount of traffic we get on our previous man boobies posts is very high indeed.

This one has to be the eewwiest one yet though! DJ Yukon Jack had Penthouse Playmate Kyli Ryan on his show and was promised a fondle if he wore a blindfold. So he puts the blindfold on and then, unknown to Jack, the Playmate was swapped for a man with boobies. The linked page has the pictures. Eewwww.

The Midnight Engine

posted by Merg @ 10:39:00 AM

Thinking of Soft Aid got me musing upon the Spectrum games I played too much of in my youth, and I got to thinking about the third and final part of Mike Singleton's classic Midnight trilogy, Eye of the Moon - perhaps second only to Bandersnatch in Spectrum mythology. Well, I vaguely recalled something about it appearing on the PC so I did a bit of poking around, and apparently, a game called "Lord of Midnight: The Citadel" did indeed appear circa '95, and the quest was for "The eye of the moon" (whatever that was...) ... so, sounds like it was just retitled. Sadly, all the online reviews suggest it is Bloody Awful™.

However, as part of all this, I got to poking around various sites reading about the 1991 conversion of the original Lords of Midnight and a little later, the sequel Doomdark's Revenge, and how some dude (we'll call him Chris -- 'cause that's his name) disassembled the original Spectrum code and then with a friend wrote a translator to x86 assembly. Result, native DOS versions. Nifty. He also mentioned a long-standing goal to port it to Windows, with snazzier graphics and various other nifty mods/additions.

Now, I thought this would be long dead, but it looks like 13 years on he's still working on it -- sort of. It's a generic engine for any "Lords" type game that just happens to be able to play LoM (and, obviously DDR too, with appropriate scenario data). And here is his current work in progress with some very nice looking screenies.

Yes, that was an awful lot of waffle for what should have been a short, simple post -- especially since I suspect the only person who'll beeven remotely interested is mmChronic ;)

Apples DOES know it's Christmas!

posted by Merg @ 9:50:00 AM

After my earlier comments about Apple and Band Aid 20 (yes, it's pants -- but it's for char-i-dee!), it seems they do know it's Christmas - at a cut price.

Apple has added the new Band Aid choon for its standard rip-off pricing of 79p. Speculation is rife that it's actually paying full price to the Band Aid guys and thus losing 70p on each transaction. So, all plaudits to Apple there.

Of course, they may have listened to it before they took this decision -- personally, I'd pay 79p to not have to hear it again this (or next) year... (tho' I don't mind the original -- and I bought Soft Aid!)

Microsoft Spaces Beta is live.

posted by mmChronic @ 9:41:00 AM

If you want a Microsoft blog fill your boots at Spaces. Very quick first impressions? Loads more templates than Blogger (but I don't know if you can mod them like we have here), it has trackbacks (we warned you Blogger!) , full stats, recent comment list (makes catching comments on older posts a lot easier), built in photo blogging (which we have due to Picasa), RSS, post categories (I forgot to mention them on my wishlist) and lots of plugin modules which no doubt will get added to a lot. There's no team blogging but as our team seems to have disappeared that's not such a problem! ;)

I think this may be more suitable to the non techie blogger (or AOLers) - Blogspot is easy but Spaces is easier.

Check out my Microsoft Blog!

They even have foetal pastimes like the Custom Feto Generator where you can create the foetus of your choice and even buy it.

The normal front page has even been taken over with an Advent Calendar which isn't quite ready yet. I don't know - people who do Advent Calendars far too late for the beginning of the month are very poorly organised. Lamers! ;)

Space Age Ant Colony

If you have an insect loving person to buy a Christmas present for then check this out. Stick some blue jelly (non toxic AND developed by NASA no less) into a clear plastic box, add some ants and you have your very own Space Age Ant Colony. The ants both live in and eat the blue jelly so no further effort required. This sounds like the pet for me!

Microsoft Invents Blogging

posted by mmChronic @ 9:05:00 AM

Microsoft are jumping onto the blogging bandwagon ages after everyone else and are to launch a blogging service at MSN. Even though they are very late to the party that won't worry Bill and his billions - they didn't bother with the interweb for a few years but they still muscled themselves into number one (users not performance!) browser spot within a very short time.

Hopefully the service will be massively feature rich - then BlogSpot (with Google's billions) can add lots of new features here just to keep up. So if anyone at BlogSpot is reading this here's what I wouldn't mind seeing:
  • Trackbacks
  • Backend comment administration
  • Better search - currently, back end has full post search with crap keyword handling, front end has Google search which is hit and miss.
  • Adding more sites to the ping list - see Ping-O-Matic for an object lesson in multiple pinging
  • English date formats when you set Date Language to English (UK) instead of American ones - this one first please as you are doing internationalisation right now.
  • Page stats - how hard can this one be? Very if you go by BlogSpot's experience with their own stat counting service, incredibly easy and powerful if you go by our experience of using StatCounter. It has to be easier to serve stats from your own servers but apparently not.
I know BlogSpot is free so you can't expect the earth - but some of the things listed above are must haves - especially if Microsoft roll them out in their offering.
