Fantasy Football
posted by mmChronic @ 1:51:00 PM
It's all change from last week and today's tables show me in the lead. Yay!
The tight top four now looks like a tight top three of me, Merg and ILuvNUFC with Dogs coming in even lower than Bungers. It's just like the Premier League - the top few teams dominating every season and 'the rest'. ;)
More football with reports for the toon match vs Everton up at BAWARAO and nufc.com.

Strip Dir 3 is a useful PHP based tool that allows you to 'strip' the images out of an Open Directory (Open Dir), Image Board or any website.
All you have to do is enter the URL of the page and click Strip!
But the best thing is that you can download all images in once! When you've stripped a page you can select several (or all) images and Strip Dir will generate a ZIP file for you to download, containing the images you've selected! It's can't be any easier!

Does Apple know it's Christmas time?
posted by Merg @ 7:12:00 AM
Apparently not. At least, not where concessions to charity are concerned. Apple, sticklers for their 99¢/79p pricing policy, are refusing to allow the dubious-quality Band Aid "update" be sold for £1.49 -- its 'universal' online price-tag, despite it being still okay to overcharge the British for having a different currency - when it favours Apple.

Friday Game - Kiiking
posted by mmChronic @ 1:19:00 PM
Here's a nice nice easy game for you all on a sunny Friday. Kiiking is playing on swings Estonian style.
And what do Estonians do with their swings that we don't? They swing all the way over the cross bar whilst standing on the swing. And if that wasn't hard enough they lengthen the ropes on the swings - the current record is a swing with a length of 7.01m.
I'm off to Heaton Park.

One For Creationists
posted by mmChronic @ 11:48:00 AM

New Links always tries to find linkage that will be of interest to our diverse readership. As that readership now seems to include Creationists (or at least people who say give Creationism a fair hearing) here's one for them. Textbook disclaimer stickers are to put on science textbooks that contain devilish ideas like evolution, the real age of the planet and other scientific heresies. Stick them on your childrens' books without delay - and if any teachers object burn them for witchcraft. Probably.
The really scary thing is the fact that the first one is a real sticker from Georgia - the American state not the European country if you hadn't guessed! Yay for fundamentalist jeebusians!

There's a new P2P client/system in town. This one is called Dijjer and according to the blurb it is trying to turn everyones PC into a cache for everyone else. So what does this mean for the end user? According to this post at slashdot it means every time you use Dijjer it will download files you didn't request. For example there are 3 files to grab off the Dijjer site. Start grabbing the first one and you may come back and find it's downloading the other two AND sharing them out to other people. Whilst this is will improve distribution times because of the higher number of available sources it's also a bit dodgy in that you may have files on your drive which you never requested and are highly illegal. Some of the slashdot posters are claiming because it's a cache there's no legal liability for the cache owner but I wouldn't want to be the test case for this one!

"Mom's Cancer" tells the story of my mother's battle with metastatic lung cancer. It's not a "how-to" manual about treating the disease. If I've learned anything, it is that every cancer, patient, physician, and outcome is unique. Rather, "Mom's Cancer" focuses on how a serious illness can affect patient and family, both practically and emotionally, in ways that I've discovered are very common. Many readers have written to tell me how surprised and gratified they were to learn they weren't alone.

In other footballing news the toon finally managed to stop the slide with a win over Crystal Palace helped by another goal for Bellars and a sweet back (surely worthy of a Baad Asssss Song!) heeled goal from wor Paddy.

Make a tingle-tron. And die. Probably.
posted by mmChronic @ 5:27:00 PM

Before you read this I recommend you don't follow the instructions. You could die.
I think that's the legal niceties out of the way. Some electricians were discussing the amount of electricity a body could take without the shockee dying. This tea break chat led to the invention of the tingle-tron which is a device for administering shocks of varying strengths.
Plug it into the mains and, using a dial to give yourself more power, see how much you can take. The instructions do talk about safety etc but give the warning several times that you could die so I don't think I'm off to make one of these.
I expect we'll see Prof. Bungers' report on the tingle-tron sometime in 2007.
Another from the b3ta newsletter.

Anarchy and Explosives and General Mayhem.
Before you waste one entire second even considering mixing, creating, or otherwise implementing the instructions in these files, be aware that people have died from some of these very texts, attempting wholescale explosives and dangerous chemical reactions based on some flimsy text file written by god knows who for god knows what. It's just way too easy for someone to have typed a 5 instead of a 4 years and years ago when they were copying out of a badly photocopied pamphlet written by someone entirely different. Your life is too precious to take such an idiotic risk. If you're going to blow things (and yourself) up, at least go the route of learning with experts, where you'll become aware of risks and fun far beyond soaking tennis balls in gasoline and lighting them. OK?!

It seems those good ol' boys at We're Not Sorry have forgotten to pay their hosting bills - the site has been replaced by a parking page for a domain hosting company. You'd think with all their tax cuts they voted for they would have had enough cash to pay their bills. Presumably they are skint now the US is spending every spare penny in Iraq. Never fear though your President is borrowing some more money to allow you to carry on killing.
If you're missing your fix of "We're Not Sorry" (or www.HowToGetTheRestOfTheWorldToHateAmerica - EvenMoreThanItAlreadyDoes.com) and can't wait until the Prez's cheque comes through try We Is Not Sorry instead. Set up by Manic at Bloggerheads so I think you know what to expect! ;)

The ban on hunting with dogs was forced through Parliament yesterday despite objections from the House of Lords. I say despite but in reality it was probably abetted by these objections. Those unelected farts in our second house are becoming more and more irrelevant to the democratic process and probably helped piss off one old fashioned Labour MP too many. Hopefully this will help bring about dissolution of the House of Lords even quicker - that's something we've been promised for ages and still not seen.
Even better it was forced through way quicker than Tony B. Liar wanted it so if it does become an election issue we might get rid of that twat too. All in all a good day for Labour - and that's real Labour not that plastic shite we have these days. We got the long awaited hunting ban, we overruled the upper class twits in the House of Lords who represent the rich minority, we've reopened the debate on the composition of the second house and last but definitely not least I suspect Tony is a tad miffed. Yay!
Hunting cats with shovels was not banned as expected so the first meeting of the Byker Hunt is at ILN's house tomorrow morning. Tally ho!

Fantasy Football League Month 2 Results
posted by mmChronic @ 11:42:00 AM
Looks like our Dogs has spawned a fluky win due to his freak scoring on the first Saturday of this season - if he'd been able to keep that scoring rate up he'd probably have won the prize for the month from the BBC. I came second again - which should mean I'm on course to be leading over the whole season. We'll see at the end of Season 3 as the 'Best 3 Months League' tables start getting compiled. Full results:

John Underwood (from Texas I know you'll be surprised to learn!) has hooked up a webcam and .22 rifle which you can control and fire from the interweb. Currently Live-Shot can only be used to shoot at paper targets but it is hoped to expand it to various species of animal soon. The American Military should set some of these up in Falluja so they can kill people without the remotest danger of them shooting back. Either that or stick to their current policy of shooting unarmed, wounded men.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a well-loved movie based on the wonderful book Charlie and Chocolate Factory. Parents love it, children love it, heck, we even love it.
That doesn't mean it's perfect.
Our goal is to expose the dark underbelly of the story. To reveal once and for all the truth about the only real villain in the movie (and no, it's not Sluggworth). It's Grandpa Joe.
We're going to break down his flaws and point them out with carefully gathered evidence from the canonical sources: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

A warning: If the thought of tens of millions of tiny spiders spinning a web 24 hectares - 60 acres - in size and crawling all over it scares the wits out of you, you might want to tread carefully over the following. Because that's exactly what happened last month on a farmer's field near McBride, about 220 kilometres east of Prince George.

Did you ever make a mistake the first time you tried something? So did these people. Here is a collection of mistakes about living and extinct organisms. But as much as these pictures might amuse you (some are pretty funny, others aren't) try to carry a little compassion in your back pocket.
Centuries ago, no one had cameras, cell phones, or an associated press service; all anyone had to distinguish between truth and fiction was a description, sometimes accompanied by an illustration. At the very same time, increased travel led to the discoveries of elephants, anteaters, ostriches and apes. Believing too little could be as bad as believing too much.

Halo 2: Biggest Selling Entertainment Thingy - Evar!
posted by mmChronic @ 9:53:00 AM
With the release of Halo 2 yesterday a new record has been set for sales of an entertainment title - and that's not just games but anything like films or music according to JoyStiq. For instance The Incredibles (current box office hot property) took a measly $75m in the first three days. Halo 2 took $125 million - on it's first day!
I of course bought my copy yesterday - and it's fscking ace! That's ace as in good mind rather than something with metallic spiders in but it's got those too.

Google Buys The World

..or at least a funky way of looking at it. They've bought Keyhole which produces software to do various Earth viewing magic like flyovers/zoom ins etc.
Google have no plans for it yet but can you imagine combining it with your searches? You'll be able to zoom into the phyical location of your search results ie look for pubs in Newcastle then the results are displayed on a pseudo 3d map. Could be cool!
The Keyhole software is currently available for a 7 day free trial but who would bet against Google making the software free like they did when they bought Picasa?

Google Now Indexes 8 BILLION Pages!
posted by mmChronic @ 4:32:00 PM
Google Blog reports that the indexed page count has risen from 4 billion to 8 billion. Have Google started deep crawling again? If so have they fixed this? If they have started deep crawling again it'll make the search bar above a tad more effective.
Don't get too excited mind. It's only 8 American billion (8,000,000,000) rather than 8 UK billion (8,000,000,000,000). Chickenfeed. Probably. ;)

These screenshots from PCSX2 look excellent. The PS2 emulator for Windows/Linux is looking very tasty indeed and is now running games. Unfortunately the emulation is far too slow currently. The games are running around 1-2 fps. The fastest screenshot I saw was the memory card screen which was running at about 4-5fps.

Looks like there's been some 7334 h@x0ring going on. Here are the real results.

ILuvNUFC was the runaway winner with his Dark Side Of The Moon just pipping his Star Wars robots. He should be allowed to invade two countries for that.
Everyone else was miles behind so no honourable mentions except for a too little, too late surge in voting for John Kerry. Never mind - there's always next time.

Apparently it makes you more attractive to women. One thing puzzles me - how do you let them know you've shaved? Do you have to wave your bollocks at the laydees? Or maybe you just have to sprinkle a few pubes around your feet - sort of like they did with the sand in the Wooden Horse.

We're Not Sorry is the other side of the coin to Sorry Everybody. It's the turn of the bigoted, stupid, guntoting, greedy, gaybashing, warmongering, redneck Americans to have their say. It's not as popular as the other site as this only has 4 pages of pictures so far compared to 160+ for Sorry Everybody. Maybe they are too stupid to submit pictures.

The Urban Beast Project.
The Urban Beast Project attempts to document and exhibit the almost extinct plight of wild and feral animals living in the midst of our urban areas. Using adaptive skills, these beasts carved out a new "natural" system of living from the peripheries of buildings, roads and parks. While most of the Urban Beasts described within have met the end of their species, it is our hope that with exposure and attention many other Beasts will be saved.

The Snail Shell System.
The SNAIL SHELL SYSTEM is a low cost system that enables persons to move around, change their whereabouts and live in various environments. One unit supplies space for one person. It is mobile both on land and water. One person can move it slowly, either by pushing it like a wheel, walking inside it or on top of it.
On water it can be rowed, moved by a kite or hooked up to a vessel, for example, a ferry. The unit rests on one flat side and can be anchored in lakes, rivers, harbours or at sea. On land, it can be placed in city spaces, fields, forests etc.

Just a reminder that the vote for last month's best icon is still going. I'm going to close it at about 5pm GMT tomorrow. This is a bit quicker than normal but voting has been fairly brisk so we've probably had as many votes as normal. The reason I'm getting rid of it early is that the pop ups from Bravenet (the poll script providers) are getting to be annoying. Sorry.

Or 100 Words and Pictures that Define the Time. Once an hour this site scans the RSS feeds for Reuters World News, BBC World Headlines and the NY Times International News.
The top 100 terms are then selected and arranged in a 10 x 10 grid with an appropriate picture from the feeds. Each word is also associated with the top stories containing the word. For instance the pictures are dominated by American GIs due to the attacks on Falluja. All the data is available as archives so you can look back over the news over a period of time and see the changing visialisation of the news. Even better the data is accessible to programmers so you can write some code to add some 10x10 style news linking to your site. I'm going to have to have a closer look at that aspect to see if we can use it in some way on here.

Photoshopped Status Quo Tattoos
posted by mmChronic @ 10:28:00 AM
B3ta regular Chobb put his ps skills to good use and did some cheesy pictures of Status Quo as tattoos on his arm. He then posted them on a Status Quo fan site and claimed they were real.
The thread is then filled with real Status Quo fans discussing their own Quo tattoos and their desire to get some tattoos just like Chobb's. Parp!
The best of it is it's pointed out a couple of times they are fakes and nobody takes a blind bit of notice presumably because they were so excited over the tattoo showing the wrinkly rockers riding guitars in a horse stylee.

Fellow employees willl be angry and frustrated feeling the unbearable weight of tiranic management on their backs. Managers won't dare remove them because there's always the possibility of it coming from someone higher than them. It's the ultimate office fun!

Cleopatra
posted by mmChronic @ 11:15:00 AM
Cleopatra is the name of the Art Institute of Chicago's multimedia guide to the Classical World - Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome. So why's it called Cleopatra? Because she was Greek by birth, ruled the Egyptian Empire and loved spicy Italian sausage. Probably.

North East votes 'no' to assembly
posted by mmChronic @ 10:01:00 AM

So we did say No4TheNorthEast after all. For me the biggest problem was the total lack of meaningful power which was definitely being given to us. We were promised some weakish powers if the Regional Assembly Bill got passed unchanged in Parliament - and there was no guarantee of that. So in effect people voting Yes were voting for a totally unknown quantity. Fsckwits.
The Yes campaign even promised to improve the transport infrastructure of the North East. All well and good but the Government had already stated the Regional Assembly would have no powers over the A1 at all. It's pretty hard to improve transport when you are not allowed to touch the main road route to and through the North East.
We can apparently have another referendum in 7 years. By then any powers should have been set in concrete and we at least will know what we are voting for.

The Monkey Sphere
posted by mmChronic @ 9:29:00 AM

This piece about the Monkey Sphere explains why the world is in such a mess. Apparently it's all to do with the sizes of monkey brains. Our monkey brain can cope with 150 people - anyone outside that limit (your 'Monkey Sphere') doesn't count for our personal moral decisions so you can safely forget about them, abuse them or even kill them.

Chinese arch construction begins

According to the BBC construction begins today on the Chinese arch in Newcastle's China Town area. If it's starting today why has that been barricaded and fenced off for the last two months? If nowt else when we go to Number One (Newcastle's premier all you can guff Chinese buffet) we have to drive an incredibly long way around due to the one way system in place around there and the currently blocked St Andrew's St.
Note I'm not complaining about the arch which I think will look cool - just the fact the traffic's been fscked up around there for months now for apparently no reason whatsoever.

Match Reports: Bolton Wanderers (a)
posted by mmChronic @ 2:03:00 PM

The reports on the Bolton away game from BAWARAO and nufc.com are up now.
Verdict from both is we were crap and Souness is out of place whinging at Bolton's tactics. He's complaining about being beaten by set plays. Well I've got news for him - they're a legal part of the game - learn to fscking deal with it. The honeymoon is over - this month should see whether Souness is any good as we get to meet serious opposition for the first time this season. Fsck knows what he will say when Manure or Chelsea score 5 goals past us.

The cheating bastards never stopped passing the ball to each other and never let us have a go. They compounded on this sneaky behaviour by scoring goals. We are complaining to the FA about their conduct.EDIT: I forgot to mention Darren Ambrose's goal - what a belter! :)

The prizes are stuff that would mostly appeal to a stoner - so that's the New Links crew signed up already. Allegedly.
