New Links Fantasy Football League?

posted by mmChronic @ 3:06:00 PM

It was announced a few weeks ago that 4 parts of the Beeb's internet arm were being closed. One of these was the Fantasy Football site which was a bit disappointing as I was looking forward to the start of a new season.

It turns out that it will be closing at the end of the coming season which means we have a free, decent, online, automatically scored, Fantasy Football game at our disposal. With prizes.

So should we set up a league for the New Links regulars? Leave comments below if you want in - if I get enough positive responses I'll make sure we have a league up and running for the start of the competition on August 28th.

..or when will that fat faced, weak chinned munter learn to stay away from his films?

Here's the all new Return Of The Jedi ending for the DVD release - with Anakin inserted into the final screen to tie up the loose ends created by plot inconsistencies caused by the release of the early Star Wars episodes.

I was under the impression the whole story was written before the filming of eps 4-6 were filmed - so if that's the case why weren't plot inconsistencies ironed out at that stage? Or is it just that George Lucas is an indecisve prick?

Some old news..

posted by Dogs @ 1:10:00 PM

As I'm on about Blair's nanny state I also have a problem with David Blunkett's announcement today that he's going to get tough on knife carrying. Sounds like something the government said years ago when a headmaster was stabbed and killed. Today's announcement is of course due to the schoolboy who was sentenced to life yesterday for the murder of another schoolboy. So just how is making carrying a knife illegal going to stop people stabbing other people? If you want to stab someone I don't suppose the illegal act of carrying a knife is going to put you off. It may have worked for guns but that's due to gun ownership being made illegal unless licensed. So are we going to need a licence to own knives?! Or is Mr Blunkett just repeating old promises that he has no intention of fullfilling? And will it make any difference anyway?

I've always suspected that the government's national ID card plan was just one step closer to Blair's nanny state. Not that I'm against anything that will make it easier to track criminals but the Big Brother approach just seems like it's wide open for abuse. And now it seems that some of our MPs think the same. 'Function creep' is the term used to describe fears that, despite good intentions, the national ID card will be used to do a lot more than just track criminals.

Manhunt gets more free publicity

posted by mmChronic @ 8:33:00 AM

Manhunt is on at least two front pages today and it is guilty of murder. Apparently. As if it wasn't not bad enough that it got itself banned from New Zealand it's now gone and committed a murder in this country. Well according to the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror anyway.

Yes it that's old chestnut again - video games make you kill people. Daft fsckers.

Mind you its such an important issue to the Mirror that they almost made it the same size as their Fantasy Football ad. And the Daily Mail's other main story today? They have 2(!) pages dedicated to animals on the Underground. So that makes New Links like the Daily Mail but 5 months faster and without the racialism. Yay!

Simpsons to reveal gay character

posted by mmChronic @ 1:33:00 PM

The Simpsons is going to have a character come out of the closet when Springfield legalises gay marriage and Homer becomes a minister.

So who is the gay Simpsons character?
"Speculation is already running rife across fan websites about who will be the mystery gay character, ranging from Mr Burns' devoted sidekick Waylon Smithers to one or both of Homer's sisters-in-law."
All I can say if it's Smithers it's not much of a bloody mystery - even my 10 year old daughter knows Smithers is gay.

My money's on Neddy boy but only because of his big gay moustache. But if it is going to be a mystery it's going to have to be harder than that. So I'm going to go for Mr Burns who will disappear into the sunset with Waylon.

Frankly, all this anger would be best directed towards evil corporations, which you did for a while at the helm of the BBC's Watchdog programme - the only show infinitely better with you on it. As it is, you've suddenly become a multi-million-dollar institution, spawning clones in hundreds of countries, presumably all winking in that terrifying "I look cuddly now, but I can hurt you. Maybe you're ultra-famous, but you'll always be a B-list celebrity in our eyes. At least you're not writing for the Daily Mail any more.

There is a huge amount of material here and some of it has to be good if only by the law of averages. The music is broken up by genre so there is punk, rock, r'n'b (rhythm and bass rather than proper r'n'b but they do have a blues section), pop, dance etc etc.

Technorati has come out of beta and has a new look to boot. Lots of other blogs are talking about the Technorati redesign. There are a lot of sites out there taking about how nice it looks - have they actually used it or just loaded the page? It seems to be badly broken.

Searches haven't worked since yesterday and the link to profiles just stopped working. I needed to go and get some new code. Not a huge problem but it would be nice if they could have let users know that the links they have back to Technorati are useless. Oh and New Links was no longer registered as belonging to anyone - I had to reclaim it. And now I can't log in at all. At least when Blogger rolled out their redeisgn it came with loads of new features and took a while to settle down. Technorati seems to have introduced no new features just a new skin so what's their excuse?

Still not to worry - it looks nice.

BugMeNot says "bring it on"

BugMeNot now requires users to register. Don't worry though as this only applies to web weasels
"If you are an employee, partner, affiliate or legal representative of any site which enforces compulsory user registration then we require you to complete our registration process. It costs nothing to register and will only take a moment."
The form required is pretty big (although I have seen actual registration forms even bigger than that) and the questions are fairly silly. Revenge is sweet! ;)

BugMeNot are also asking non registration sites to add the following to their TOS:
Any subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, agents, or employees of any site employing compulsory user registration mechanisms are not authorized to access the content or services of this site.
which would effectively make it illegal for say NY Times reporters to use the web if everybody did it. New Links may well have a one paragraph TOS in place tonight!

NUFC.com asked readers to email in their views on Newcastle United signing Patrick Kluivert. The link is to the first selection they've published.

For what it's worth I've wanted Kluivert to come to the toon for a few years now and it always seemed on the cards. But more recently it was Beattie who seemed to be our target and I had gradually warmed to and eventually liked that idea. I'm definitely not complaining though as Kluivert is world class - and we'll buy Beattie next summer when we are preparing for the Champion's League. ;)

Newcastle has been chosen to host a World Cup qualifier between England and Azerbaijan in March 2005.This good news has been tempered by the fact that the cockney scum over at Old Trafford will get to host the other 4 games!! When exactly did Manchester become the centre of England?
The reason given for the two grounds that have been chosen is the fact that they are the biggest in the country. It's all down to FA greed, the games could be shared with other cities such as Birmingham or Liverpool. The only problem is the FA will not get as much gate money. So what's a few quid compared to keeping a fresh atmosphere which you would get if the games were spread around and giving more people their last chance to see England in a quality game outside stinking London. It's only fair the games should be held outside London because when the new Wembley stadium is built the rest of England will never see another international game, but that's another argument. The UK Independence Party has decided to deal with women's issues. Godfrey Bloom, their new MEP for Yorkshire and Humber is concerned about women "Because I just don't think they clean behind the fridge enough". He also went on to say that no right minded businessman would ever employ a woman of child bearing age.
I'm not sure what to make of UKIP, maybe they're having a laugh but I'm sure they're up to no good. I suspect they appeal to anyone who would like to bring back hanging, national service, corporal punishment, ban immigration and, if Mr Humber has his way, to put women back in the kitchen. No doubt they appeal to those who are too embarrassed to vote BNP.

Here is an article about someone called Mike who turned the tables on the 419'ers.He replied to the Nigerian that he could'nt possibly help someone who was not of the same faith as him.So guess what? The Nigerian became a member of the "Church of the Painted Breast" and even mailed a picture of himself doing the initiation.Check the pictures.
I know this kind of thing is'nt new to the Tinter-web, Mergs, but i just recieved my first 419 yesterday after nearly 2 years online.Previous to that i was beginning to feel left out.

I think we need one of these

posted by mmChronic @ 9:51:00 AM

I need some help with posting as all of New Links' other posters seem to have died so this may come in handy. R. Robot: The first self-writing weblog is a very clever blog - and there's not a human in sight! It's a perl and MT mash up and pretty funky it is too.

Stick a name in and it'll write a post with that name in and some related googling. So if you go now you'll find an article about BykerSink (real one here) and one with me in.

EDIT: The links direct to the posts don't work - it looks like the post pages aren't created - so if you want to see the posts generated scoot over quickly before other posts knock them off the page.

You Send It

posted by mmChronic @ 7:05:00 PM

Bhell13 posted a link the other day for a service called Dropload which allowed you to upload a file up to a 100Mb in size and they will store it for you. You send the download link to your mates and they have up to 4 days to grab whatever you've stuck up there. After that the file is deleted. Nice easy way of sending files to friends.

But New Links users don't want a puny 100Mb file limit and a measly 4 day storage time. We've been spoiled by Gmail and nothing less than 1Gb storage will do. A week of storage time would be nice too. Which is where YouSendIt comes in.

We tried it on Saturday night about 9pm so the file we uploaded should be there until 9pm (BST) 17th July. It's a 6.8Mb wmv video of a slightly strange Japanese pop song with mad anime effects. Try it for a mini speed test. Just as well Bungers is out of the country as this may have proved too big for his steam powered dial up thingummyjig. ;)

Note with both of these services that you can upload as many files as you want, send the links to yourself and publish it just like we have with the video. In addition to this YouSendIt has no sign up process. MP3 blog anyone?

Hollywood Is Calling

posted by mmChronic @ 1:41:00 PM

Do you want an American Z list celeb to 'phone you on your birthday so you can pretend you have friends? Then Hollywood Is Calling could be what you are looking for. For $19.95 you can be called by someone as famous as Lou Ferrigno, Larry Holmes or erm... a baldy Willis from different strokes.

Of course if you've truly no friends save yourself the money and pretend one of these 'superstars' called you - it's not as if you're going to get found out.

I have to go - Cameron Diaz and Angelina Jolie are on the phone for me. I'm so glad I have that 3 way call option.

American Segue :: America at 10 MPH

posted by mmChronic @ 12:16:00 PM

A group of 3-6 Americans are going to ride a Segway from Seattle to Boston and make a documentary about the people they meet and events that happen on the way.

They are of course going to blog about it so we don't have to wait for the documentary. The trek starts August 5th.

My money's on them being ambushed by some of those militia looneys in the NW forests and the Segway ending up with a nice camo paint job.

One of the few things I still use IE is for checking the Google PageRank of a page via the Google toolbar. This new extension for Firefox, Page Rank Status, puts the Page Rank for a page on the status bar. Needs Firefox 0.9+.

I've also crossed off MSN groups as a reason to use IE as Firefox now handles those pages beautifully. I think the only reason to use IE now is for Windows update - and if you do it via the control panel bit you don't actually use IE.

Yahoo! launches GMail?

posted by mmChronic @ 1:33:00 PM

A webmail service called Oddpost has been bought by Yahoo. And according to this piece here GMail is very 'Oddpostish'. This was spotted by a Yahoo exec and the deal was announced yesterday. Oddpost are no longer taking new signups so I wasn't able to have a go. Presumably the Oddpost stuff will be integrated into Yahoo! Mail as quickly as possible so we'll get to see it soon anyway.

I can't comment on the similarities between GMail and Oddpost as I'd never heard of Oddpost before I saw this. But if Oddpost is as good as or even better better than GMail the online email war will just get hotter and hotter. This time next year they'll be giving us free iPods to use their services. Probably.

I wonder what Microsoft are going to buy? Yahoo and Google are carving out huge chunks of the web for themselves and Bill's MSN is slipping behind in terms of what's on offer. We're listening to offers for New Links Bill! ;)

Fifty-nine Deceits in Fahrenheit 911

posted by mmChronic @ 9:08:00 AM

I thought the role of a documentary was to educate people on a subject and expose the truth? So how can any truth you expose hold any weight if your documentary contains not just a couple of inaccuracies but fifty nine instances of 'deceit' (was 56 but they keep on coming!)? It's all very well lauding Mikey as the man to get the message across to a mass audience but if the message itself contains 'deceits','inaccuracies' or downright lies then it should not be the cornerstone of a revolution no matter how much you want it. Or is it OK to lie when you are on the side of the Good Guys? Seems a pretty dodgy, indefensible moral standpoint to take if you ask me.

I will still be going to see the film and I'm sure I will totally agree with it's message. But my point remains - you don't spread the truth by telling lies. There is enough ammunition against the ChimpMeister without having to stoop to his level.

I would have expected at least one gratuitous booby scene where she took a bath or something but the water board obviously didn't pay enough for that. Cheapskates.

The obvious question has to be: If their systems are so good how come they buy huge amounts of water from us (or more accurately the French company that runs Kielder these days) every year? Maybe they should spend some of their 'new media' budget on fixing their fscking leaky pipes?

New Links Night In?

posted by mmChronic @ 6:42:00 PM

Here's Mikey!Yar!After Bungers suggestion of a night out to see Fahrenheit 911 it seems we don't have to venture outside after all.

It seems that the spoof piece about Mikey releasing Fahrenheit 9/11 via BitTorrent we linked to a while ago has proved to be prophetic. Mikey says "pirate my film, no problem". Thanks Mikey.

Try to tackle me and I'll break your fscking legs! The toon won a cup - by association. Sort of. Ex Mag Nikos Dabizas' Greece won Euro 2004 last night. Nick didn't get a game but he did make the subs' bench. He is fondly remembered in Newcastle for his hairy chested celebration after scoring against the mackems. He is slightly less well fondly remembered for trailing 20 yards behind Michael Owen on several occasions but the mackem goal helps ease that memory!

He has now won more international competitions than 'world class' defenders like Sol Cambell annd John Terry.

And yes I know Independence Day was yesterday - but it only finished 15 minutes ago in California.

posted by mmChronic @ 3:06:00 PM

We've got a lot more icons than the 10 images allowed on the poll so I've set two polls up to and set it to give you a random one of the two when you refresh the page. I'll leave it up until 5pm (ish) on Friday. I haven't decided on the prize yet but there will be one.

Bearing in mind Bungers has now left country for a few weeks and went to somewhere that doesn't even have telephones (probably) never mind internet access it should be a relatively cheat free poll. :)

EDIT: Poll now closed. Results here.

Duuuurrrrrrrbut may not be particularly good either!"The definitive fart movie of this generation" is how it describes itself. Are there any others?.

Anyway, back to the story. There is a few clips of the movie here to watch and in the first one a bloke is asked "if he has ever farted on a girl" to which he lets out a big laugh as if he is mighty embarressed to be asked such a question then he slips in a "Yeh" after his laughing has stopped.Class.Another of the videos has a lady trying to light her man's farts but all he does is blow the match out with his guffs.

So who's betting against a Fox graphic artist looking for a new job round about now?

Loosers

posted by Dogs @ 2:04:00 PM

You may have read about Beckham's portrait being scrawled on the other day.
I just want to know if "Loosers" is some trendy hipslang jive talk that has passed me by (a Google search certainly produces lots of results) or just the product of fookwit literacy. Some bright chap suggested that Loosers was a deliberate reference to Rebecca "scheming slapper" Loos. I don't think so.

Especially as "Beckham and Meier, you loosers" would seem to imply that not only has Mr Meier scuppered our Euro 2004 hopes but he's been scuppering Miss Loos too. As much as I'd like to believe that's true I'm afraid crap literacy is a far more likely explanation.

Revamped Sony Walkman to silence iPod

I find your lack of faith in OSX disturbing.Sony is gunning for the iPod (again) with the Network Walkman NW-HD1, which they claim will be the smallest 20GB MP3 player you can buy when it comes out in mid-August.

Sony debuts revamped Walkman to silence iPod It might stand a chance too, if it wasn't for the fact that it was so crappy looking.

Threetwoone Diagrams

posted by mmChronic @ 12:35:00 PM

The threetwoone site is about presenting different types of information on diagrams. There are some fascinating diagrams there including the War of the Roses, Hitler's family tree, a more recent right wing, country invading, just plain evil dictator's dynasty and everyone's favourite fantasy novel, the Bible.

It appears dogs has unearthed an historical artifactMy favourite diagram of all time (and widely considered as one of the best diagrams of all time) is Minard's diagram of Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia (big pic here) which doesn't feature as all the diagrams on threetwoone are Mark Poyser originals. We should ask him to do an updated version for Iraq.

Follow Up : Swiss Ref Goes Into Hiding

posted by bungers @ 12:34:00 PM

Swiss referee Arse Meier - whose controversial decision to disallow England's last-minuter against Portual last week - has been forced into hiding in his homeland and has been assigned police protection after claiming he'd received death threats from England fans.

Meier became the most hated man in England after his controversial decision not to allow Sol Campbell's headed goal denied England a last minute place in Euro 2004's Quarter Finals. The referee said he had received more than 16,000 emails from England fans after newspapers published his email address and the police are now advising him not to visit places where he is known.
