CD Rot

Have you backed up your backups? Offsite some of us have discussed the way CDs rot and here is an article about the phenomenon. Apparently even the same brand may not be consistently durable. The way they are manufactured constantly changes which leads to differences in lifespans of what is outwardly the same disc. Some advice for storage from the article:

"For maximum longevity, discs should be stored vertically and only be handled by the edges. Don't stick labels on them, and in the case of write-once CDs, don't write on them with anything but soft water-based or alcohol-based markers."

So the teetering pile of 83 CDs beside my monitor isn't a good idea?
