ABCNews posts review of first US Presidential debate -- BEFORE debate takes place.

posted by Merg @ 11:06:00 PM

Some pics of the articles here. (Sadly, huge .bmp's rather than .png's...).

Am I alone in wondering if ABC staffers are possessors of crystal balls? (And if so, do they clink when walking?)

EDIT: The Independent Just did it too:
Last night's presidential debate pitted George Bush against John Kerry on the issues of national security, terrorism and Iraq - issues that, almost certainly, will decide the election. Yet, for all the claims of deep differences, in many respects the foreign policies of the two candidates are very similar.'

Posted ~1hr30m before the debate starts...

Update:
I watched the debate. Kerry 0wn3d Bush totally. At one point, Bush appeared to claim that it was Iraq that attacked the US and Kerry had to remind him it was al Qaeda.

Meaningless online polls: (as of now)
Who won the first presidential debate?

CNNCBSMSNBCWSJ
President George W. Bush18%7.79%30%23%
Sen. John Kerry79%91.46%70%72%

A quote from a BBC interview "... it was amazing to watch the wheels come off this presidency...".

Not a bad night, all things considered.

Saddam to Declare Candidacy for Iraqi Elections

posted by Merg @ 5:28:00 PM

From Zaman News:
"Overthrown Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who was arrested by US forces last December, reportedly plans to run as a candidate in the Iraqi elections scheduled for January 2005.

Saddam's lawyer Giovanni di Stefano told Denmark's B.T. newspaper that Saddam decided during one of their discussions that he would declare his candidacy for the elections.

Stefano said that there was no law that prevented Saddam from appearing on the ballot. He added that Saddam hopes to regain his presidency and palaces via the democratic process."

Blogging multiple pictures in a single post

posted by mmChronic @ 7:35:00 PM

When we first started using Picasa's free unlimited jpg image hosting we only had one complaint and that was regarding the fact you couldn't post multiple images at once.

We worked around this using the New Links picture dump to dump the images (and our icons) which we then hack about and put in a single post if we want to. Well it seems there is a way to queue images and post them to a single post after all. We'll be expecting a double post from Bungers tomorrow.

SpaceShipOne is about to launch at 2pm - I think! The BBC site says it is due to go at 1pm GMT. I'm crap at the whole clock going forward/backwards for BST so I'm unsure whether 1pm GMT is 12pm BST or 2pm BST. As no one is reporting it has took off yet I'll plump for 2pm.

UPDATE: The New Scientist says it will actually be at 1447 BST - so in about an hour then.

Still Seeking a Fair Florida Vote

posted by Merg @ 6:54:00 PM

Still Seeking a Fair Florida Vote (washingtonpost.com):
"After the debacle in Florida four years ago, former president Gerald Ford and I were asked to lead a blue-ribbon commission to recommend changes in the American electoral process. After months of concerted effort by a dedicated and bipartisan group of experts, we presented unanimous recommendations to the president and Congress. The government responded with the Help America Vote Act of October 2002. Unfortunately, however, many of the act's key provisions have not been implemented because of inadequate funding or political disputes.

The disturbing fact is that a repetition of the problems of 2000 now seems likely, even as many other nations are conducting elections that are internationally certified to be transparent, honest and fair."

Coders (and printers) know how useful Lorem Ipsum is but it makes for very boring reading when you've seen it for the millionth time during testing.

Now there's an alternative - the Malevole Text Generator asks you for the number of paragraphs of text you require and generates them. So what's different? The source of the text used - it's drawn from song lyrics, cartoons and TV series.

For example the page I am currently working on has three paragraphs of generated text consisting of the Muskehounds, Thundercats and Hong Kong Phooey theme songs. This should make page development slightly more amusing if nothing else! :)

Bush Worst Ever On Environment

posted by Merg @ 9:07:00 AM

RollingStone.com: Politics - Crimes Against Nature:
"George W. Bush will go down in history as America's worst environmental president. In a ferocious three-year attack, the Bush administration has initiated more than 200 major rollbacks of America's environmental laws, weakening the protection of our country's air, water, public lands and wildlife. Cloaked in meticulously crafted language designed to deceive the public, the administration intends to eliminate the nation's most important environmental laws by the end of the year. Under the guidance of Republican pollster Frank Luntz, the Bush White House has actively hidden its anti-environmental program behind deceptive rhetoric, telegenic spokespeople, secrecy and the intimidation of scientists and bureaucrats."

Some guestbook entries from a pro-Democrat blog site. Some of it's absolutely hilarious. Here's my favourite bit:
The democrats want ultimite control over the poeple through the goverment.
Why would they do that you ask?
Because in a socialism goverment only the ones with money are worth anything.
Only those with money are respected and feared.
Only those with money have power.
Thats what socialism is and democrats want it.

Do you think this guy read 1984?

Edit: Update -- even more wingnuttery here. This one's also viewable/listenable and much funnier that way -- click the Washington Journal 23rd Sept. stream and fast-forward to the 1hr56m mark and listen to the caller from Louisiana. Pure comedy gold.

So how are you going to access your Gmail account and surf the web in the style you've become accustomed to?

Just make sure whatever net cafe you go to has PCs with USB and you're sorted. Portable Firefox can be installed onto, and ran completely from, a USB memory stick. So I could even stick this on my XD card for my camera and just plug my camera into a PC to get a decent browser.

I finally caught up with the rest of the world and read the Da Vinci code the other day expecting a rollicking good read with lots of historical accuracy. What I got was what I described to Bungers as an average potboiler which despite claims to historical accuracy was very inaccurate in a lot of places. The disturbing thing to me is that Brown's version seems to have become interweb gospel.

Well let this be a lesson to all the believers. It's a fictional story not a history book.

Mmm! Powerful, the Force is. Yes! Suffering leads to darkness. A Jedi uses the Force to protect and defend, never to destroy. If you do not have commitment, consume you will the Dark Side. To give into the evil pull of fear is to give your destiny over to the Dark Side. Wrath leads to impatience!
Take these into your heart and mind and you too a Jedi will be. Probably.

And do not adjust your realplayer during the first 90 seconds or so, because that really IS in Dutch. The rest's in English though, and it's pretty strong stuff.

Apple about to be pwned by - Apple!

posted by mmChronic @ 4:00:00 PM

Apple (computer company) are about to get fscked over by Apple (music company). Normally I would be on the side of whoever was fighting a record company - not this time as Apple (computers) have proved to be just as greedy as the record companies. Serves the greedy hippy arsemunching twats right for trying to rip us off.

I'm sure we've referred on here to Apple (computers) being sued by Apple (music) for using their trademarked name (erm... Apple) but I can't find it - it may have been in our long defunct commenting system. The settlement included Apple (computers) not entering the music business in any way, shape or form. We also muttered about iTunes clearly being an entry into the music business and it would only be a matter of time before Apple (music) got on the case. Well that time has arrived.

AFAIK the only profitable bit of Apple (computers) is the music side - iPods and iTunes. Take any settlements out of that and they could be looking at yet another huge loss. My heart bleeds. Parp!

Iraq war illegal, says Annan

posted by mmChronic @ 8:23:00 AM

That's right it's official our invasion of Iraq was illegal. Kofi Annan says any decision about what to do with Iraq after failure to comply with weapons inspections should have been made by the UN Security Council and not unilaterally. It's what we all knew but to have had it said by the head of UN must be fairly embarassing for Blair and Bush considering they tried to use the UN to give themselves legitimacy. So who are the international terrorists now?

So what happens now? Surely if the invasion was illegal like say the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait then the UN surely has to issue the ultimatum to get out of Iraq now and if we fail to comply raise a global coalition against us. Can't see that happening really but it's what we did to Iraq the first time around.

Blair should be forced to go though - he's taken this country into an illegal war and lied to the British people about Iraq's WMD capabilities. Tony won't resign as he is like the rest of New Labour and will stubbornly hang on to his position long after it is obvious he shouldn't. There is currently an attempt to impeach him but I can't see that getting him out of office. So it's either up to Labour MPs to deselect him as leader at the Labour Party conference or the British public to vote him out in the next General Election. If I was a Labour MP wanting to stay on the gravy train that is the elected government I'd be giving serious thought to the former course of action.

Bush - Tough on Security.

posted by Merg @ 10:58:00 PM

My friends all know I'm fascinated by US Politics, and follow it closely.

So, there I was, reading the Washington Post when I came across this article. And I was astounded. Here's why (emphasis mine):

"The White House put government agencies on notice this month that if Bush is reelected, his budget for 2006 may include $2.3 billion in spending cuts from virtually all domestic programs not mandated by law, including education, homeland security and others central to Bush's campaign."

Yet Bush said:

"... when you get them headed to the polls, tell them if you want a safer America, a stronger America, a better America, put Dick Cheney and me back in office."

So... keeping America safe by cutting funding to the agency whose job it is to keep America safe.

It's a novel approach, I'll give him that.

UK Police to get Tasers

The BBC are reporting that barking mad Home Secretary David Blunkett has authorised the issue of Tasers to UK police forces. They apparently are very safe and there is only a "very low risk of fatality". Well that's alright then.

If only they'd been issued this morning they could have zapped the bolshy farmers that invaded the House of Commons today.

Blunkett's next policy announcement could be the replacement of the now banned fox hunting with dogs (yay!) with quadbike mounted hunting of burglars, using Tasers to bring them down. That'll compensate the farmers for their loss of fox hunting and bring down crime at a single stroke. Probably.

Want GMail? Got no friends?

posted by mmChronic @ 8:25:00 AM

GMail invites are 10 a penny (I think I have about 15 in total to give away) but everyone I know has got one and most of them have got multiple invites to give away too. So how come there are still people looking for invites?

It's now become the trend on many sites to give away a GMail invite as a prize/freebie to get people to comment on a piece. I think I'd pack in blogging if this blog was so boring we needed to give stuff away to get people to comment!

Anyway let's chop this evil practice off at the knees. The isnoop site accepts gmail invites and doles them back out - to anyone. For nothing. So if you haven't got one check it out. If you've got spare invites consider sending some at least to isnoop.

Yes you read that right. It's not a bestiality site with a typo at all - Cast Fetish is for people with a fetish for plaster casts. May be NSFW.

You can even buy the casts once they've been finished with which sounds to me to be another opportunity for New Links to expand it's corporate reach. We could buy used ones cheap in bulk from the RVI then sell them for anything up to $75 each apparently!

Along with our plan to 'discover' a hoard of early Apple Mac cases we'll be rich in no time.

Newcastle United Football Club - Match reports - Blackburn Rovers (h)

posted by mmChronic @ 10:47:00 AM

The Blackburn Rovers match report is up at nufc.com.

Noted in particular was increased workrate from certain players which was commented on by plenty of other people, including myself, in the ground. This leads Biffa to pose the following pertinent question:
He, like more than one or two others though, must wonder why there was a general raising of the effort input and energy expended by his new charges - did they really despise Bobby so much?
Spot on - if this level of workrate had been reached consistently last season we would definitely have got CL and who knows what else.

The good thing about this is Souness has now seen what level of effort can be got out of them - I have a feeling that if anyone now drops below that level they'll be getting a hefty boot up the arse.

I'm off to put Lauren Robert in my Fantasy Football team.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (and 3000th Post!)

posted by mmChronic @ 3:51:00 PM

This is New Links 3000th post so to commemorate the event here's a free PC game as a bit of a giveaway. Aren't we generous? ;)

Some of us have been muttering about some online multiplay death action between the New Links lads. The only thing really stopping us (apart from Bungers skinny pipe - fnark glurgle) was finding a game we all had.

Well problem solved. Merg told me about Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and I grabbed it the other night. It was originally developed as an addon to Return To Castle Wolfenstein but Activision decided not to release it commercially and gave it away for free. It's totally standalone (ie you don't need RTCW) and there are free public servers.

It's a WWII FPS with mission based multiplayer maps. The missions are things like escorting a tank to the enemy HQ, blowing up guns and various other things. All this whilst shooting the cack out of each other.

You'll need the main program, the latest patch and some bots if you want to practice offline. The New Links Deathmatch Challenge has been laid. Who's up for it?

Guns don't shoot people, mackems do

posted by mmChronic @ 8:17:00 AM

I was going to post this yesterday but Blogger was broken and so I forgot all about it.

4 mackem 'footballers' have been cruising the streets of Sunderland shooting people with an air gun. They've been arrested and cautioned.

The latest developments last night was that all 4 were suspended pending an internal investigation. This must be due to the escalation in coverage though rather than a sense of what is right. The original statement from the club when the news broke on Tuesday was along the lines of 'The players have apologised and want to put this behind them'.

This already staggeringly stupid incident (2 incidents actually as 1 of the four was arrested for a different shooting!) is even more stupid when you remember this happened there just a couple of years ago. I believe the victim has subsequently lost the use of the injured eye though I haven't found linkage to back that up. John Oster, the one firing the gun, has not to my knowledge been charged with this offence. He still 'plays' for the mackems so they obviously don't really care either.

I suppose it's too much to ask mackems to learn from mistakes as learning requires some sort of intelligence which we all know they are a bit short on.

posted by mmChronic @ 11:48:00 AM

...probably isn't Jack Charlton so do something about it by voting here.

Northumberland County Council are doing a poll on their site on the above subject and JC is currently in the lead. So what? Well the list also contains Jackie Milburn who has to be worth a vote. Not that I'm trying to influence you like. ;)

Pretty much every other person on the list is more deserving than our ex-manager so get to it - There's Armstrong (who gave us bridges, guns and a cracking park) , Stephenson (who gave us the Away Day Saver), Capability Brown (who brought us landscape gardening) , Emily Wilding Davison (who got helped get the vote for the laydees) and a posh bird (WTF!?!?!).

George W. Bush: Words Speak Louder than Actions

posted by Merg @ 2:20:00 PM

A clip from Comedy Central's The Daily Show - a show that I miss seeing when I'm back in Blighty.

Available here if you have Quicktime and the 3ivx codec, or on the Daily Show website in WMV9.

Highly amusing.

Oddly, 3ivx claims to be regular MPEG4 but xvid and DivX 5 couldn't play the video.

What would Jeebus do? He'd use the Force of course.

posted by mmChronic @ 1:41:00 PM

It appears mad Jeebusians are trying to portray Jeebus as a Jedi in a bid to convert the modern 'yoof'.

Of course if he was a Jedi then we would never have had the whole Jeebusian cult as he wouldn't have been crucified.

Pilate: He must die.
Jeebus: You do not need to kill me.
Pilate: OK then.

Heritage Open Days

posted by mmChronic @ 1:57:00 PM

Next weekend (10th-13th September) is the Open Heritage Days event we talked about a while back. Lots of places of historical interest that are normally kept locked up are open to the public.

Here are the Tyne and Wear events which include Grey's Monument being opened on Sunday. You will have to climb 164 steps to get to the top but it's worth it as the view is stunning. The Swing Bridge tour isn't listed but it was on the local news the other night. Places on that tour MUST be prebooked. I'll post more info on that if I spot any.

Wouldn't it be fitting if report number 2 (number 1 here) in New Links Guide To Newcastle's Historic Tunnels series were written in time for the event? Parp.

Can it get any worse at the toon?

posted by mmChronic @ 12:01:00 PM

Apparently so - The Journal are reporting Glenda Hoddle is after the job and that whatever happens an announcement will be made Monday. This self inflicted deadline seems a bit stupid if it's true - do the Newcastle board just take any old shite to ensure the post is filled by then? It certainly sounds it if Hoddle is considered to be a viable option.

Will Glen demand to see disabled fans areas being moved to the back of Level 7 as a punishment for sins in an earlier life? That aside he's useless as a coach. He comes across as very Gullit like - an arrogant prick. I would even prefer Venables to this tool.

Nufc.com are reporting that Ottmar Hitzfeld has been seen on his way to Newcastle - has to be a better bet than Hoddle?

...to the Bungers and Merg show!

Seeing as mmChronic was moaning about the lack of linkage yesterday, I'll try and sort out you all out with some quality news, rounded up from around the world today, in a John Craven style-ee. First off...

"Clerks" Clocking in for More.

Yeppers, Kevin Smith - the director responsible for the whole "New Jersey Chronicles" series of movies - Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back - has been inspired to put pen to paper after assembling a new anniversary DVD set titled Clerks X to cash in on the celebrate the 10th anniversary of his first movie. The new film, The Passion of the Clerks, is scheduled for release this time next year, and picks up a decade later on the non-adventures of Quick Stop convenience store employees Dante and Randal, who are now forced to deal with life as thirtysomethings.

EDIT : I forgot to mention that Kevin Smith has a hot wife who did a 5318008 shoot for Playboy, and the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back features the talents of Shannon Elizabeth. Mmmmmmm...
