One For Bungers

Seeing as how you are contemplating catching up with us NewLinkers and having broadband installed here is another cheap deal on the market. The only problem with cheap deals is your restricted to 1 or 2G a month on most of them. The company i am with (Freeserve £27 a month) have just been took over by Wannadoo and now they have also imposed a 15G limit on the package i subscribe to.Luckily i signed up just in time to avoid this cap and i remain able to get whatever whenever i want. The best thing about broadband is downloading movies and stuff and i probably would'nt have bothered with it if it had a cap of any kind. How about other readers chipping in their knowledge of available deals so we can get Bungers the best deal possible?

There is no worthwhile competition currently to the ISP I'm with - Blueyonder. 3/4Mb (theoretical max 96Kb/s - and I've achieved this speed frequently) for 25 quid per month with no download cap. Equivalent ADSL packages are at 1/5Mb (theoretical max 64Kb/s - rare to achieve) and are capped. Plus you can get shit speeds on ADSL depended on distance from exchange, quality of exchange, quality of line, number of users on your exchange etc etc. Blueyonder is fibre optic all the way to the house.

Unfortunately you have to live in a Blueyonder cabled area which I believe Bungers does.

I hate the shitsuckers at Telewest though! Their whole raison d'etre irritates me. Or something.

Before you read this - the context we are talking about is a normal user surfing and downloading stuff.

Everything I've ever read about ADSL has harped on about max speeds not being reached due to all of the above things I mentioned.

Upstream means fsck all Bungers or ILN or me. We download. Might be useful to you to have a bit more but not to me. And yes I know your are going too rattle on about it allowing more outgoing connections or something but again not a problem to me.

£35 quid buys you 1.5Mb at Blueyonder. No cap. Beats the 1mb zen. Are offering. Pipex are good but that's because you pay for it.

And when was the last time my dynamic IP changed? And I would use multiple IPs for? We are talking about normal users surfing here.

Oh, yeah... Merg, since when did I say 256Kb 1/5 of 1Mb? :)

The only 1/5 I have in there would be the bit where I did a 1/2Mb typo. I was thinking ahead and endup typing decimal half (0.5) at bottom of fractional half.

Did that cover everything?

I can upgrade to 1mb with no cap but it will cost about £33 a month.I currently have a 576kb connection and now i'm starting to max out on 60-64k p/s download.

All this bickering doesn't resolve the actual issue here... which is "what is the most uncapped bandwidth, at the least cost, that is available to me".

Tsk tsk... ;)

Off to school guys.ILuvNUFC Junior has had an accident.

I knew you would be lost. Merg should know better! He knows even I glaze over when it comes to network shizzle. :)

I stand by my statement that Blueyonder currently do the best UK broadband deal for consumers who like to download 'stuff' which is, I believe, the subject of the main post.

Bungers: I did - Merg just muddied the water.

ILN: nowt serious I hope?

Upspeed does have an effect - but the most important number is the down speed. I'd rather have 50% more downspeed and 50% less upspeed than you any day than say a 50% decrease in downspeed and a 50% increase in upspeed. And guess what? I've got the former. As you say I probably haven't noticed (make that definitely haven't noticed) any effect due to up speeds.

If you want to do grammar - way easier targets than me on here! I suppose when I do the odd slip it is more noticeable but remind me to pick you up on your spelling in future. I'd given up on this type of nitpick (it got boring) but I feel a sudden urge to start again. :)

The 2mb isn't yours! You are just using it. :)

re Static vs Dynamic. I can get static if I want it - again not bothered. It's nice having a semi permanent address but I wouldn't die if I didn't.

ILN's IP changes every 3 minutes (exaggeration) on his ADSL service. It just depends who you sign up with I guess. He has one of these 2 hr disconnects and always gets a new IP. Still can't see how multi IP's would be useful to me - NAT works.

Congestion? Not me. 96KB/s for matey - smell the scorching speed....

As for the NTL/BY thing - I'll worry about that if I ever get capped not now when it's a vague maybe.

And finally I said:
"Unfortunately you have to live in a Blueyonder cabled area which I believe Bungers does."

You said:
"And finally, if all this is intended to recommend a broadband hookup for our beloved Bungers, why are you expounding the joys of what he can't have?"

I said:
PARP!!!!!!

mmChronic said...

Now that you've seen Bungers can get BY would you recommend a 34 quid 1Mb or a 35 quid 1.5Mb? ;)

I don't have a 2 hour disconnect.That was when i was on a slo-dem.
ILN junior is cool- panic over.Lots of blood and stuff but he is canny tough.

mmChronic said...

SO if you don't get the disconnect now how come your ip changes quite a bit over the day?

With a dynamic one you get assigned it as soon as you connect and generally keep it for a while. You usually get more than few hours!

Glad to hear about the bairn - he obviously takes after his uncle mm and not his namby pamby dad! ;)

My IP changes every time i switch my PC on.Quite oft it is on and off during the day espesh if im not using it as the fan is crap and i need a new one.Donations required.

That'll explain that then...
