Meme Tag, I'm It

posted by mmChronic @ 10:19:00 AM

ILN has meme tagged me for one of those fill in the list things. Thankfully there are only 4 items per section so it's reversing the trend for these to get bigger and bigger.

Four Jobs I've had:
Milkman
Pizza chef
Painter and decorator
Computer programmer

Four Movies I Could Watch Over and Over:
LOTR (1,2 and/or 3)
Goodfellas
Godfather (1,2 and definitely not 3)
Memento (it's probably a good thing to watch at least a couple of times anyway)

Four Places I have Lived:
Byker
Heaton
Wallsend
Battlefield

Four TV Shows I Would Love to Watch:
Now this is an oddly phrased one - does it mean stuff I've seen and would love to see again (and if so would that bar stuff that I AM watching again on cable) or is it stuff I've never seen and would love to see? I'll go with the former (without barring stuff I am already rewatching) as there's nothing I haven't seen that I'd love to see.
Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em - being repeated lots on cable - woo!
Walking With... (Cavemen, Dinosaurs, Beasts) - complete series available free as part of my Cable On Demand package - double woo!
Fawlty Towers
Connections - a cool history/science series in the 70s by James Burke. Never seen this one since I first saw it when I was about 10/11 and would love to see it again.
Look ma - no ITV! ;)

Four Places I have been on Vacation:
Amsterdam
Milan
Blankenberge
Beddgelert

Four Websites You Visit Daily:
Google
Digg
Reddit
NUFC.com

Four of My Favorite Foods:
Calamari
Steak and chips and all the trimings
Things with chili in
Chicken Jerk sandwiches from the sandwich shop near my last job.

Four Places I would Rather Be:
Than work? Or where I live? If the former bed is always a good place to be rather than work and if the latter nowhere.

Four Albums I Cannot Live Without:
2 self titled albums:
The Stone Roses
Box Car Racer
And 2 compilations to get a good sampling of the artists as I couldn't limit myself to a single album by them:
Shenanigans / Green Day
Who's Better, Who's Best / The Who (though I wouldn't mind getting hold of Ultimate Collection too)

Four People to Tag:
I'll choose 3 New Links posters (we have to get postage somehow or other!) and 1 off site blogger:
Bungers
Merg
Shepy
Taoski (though he might be too busy playing on his new 360!)

Morning! mmChronic and I were out stencil spotting the other day. We found some cool ones in Newcastle. This one (above) looks like it might be in Southwark or somewhere, and comes to you courtesy of flickr and yorkshire4. I'll get my camera tomorrow and post the cool one we found. TTFN!

GREYCstoration

posted by mmChronic @ 7:03:00 PM

...or Fast Anisotropic Smoothing of Multi-Valued Images by Curvature-Preserving PDE's. Oh well that's clear then. ;)

So what is GREYCstoration? It's a nice mathematical method of cleaning up dirty images. By dirty I mean those with speckles, scratches, JPEG artefacts and various other defects. There's a big gallery of before and after images and some of the results are vey impressive indeed.

It's available as a command line tool but installation sounds a bit fiddly as it relies on various other things being installed. However there's a much easier way to get your hands on it - it's available as a plugin for Gimp.

Oh and it's free. We likes free. :)

Geordie Songs

posted by ILuvNUFC @ 1:19:00 AM

I came across a couple of really funny Geordie songs that take the micky out of the great unwashed(Sunderland) somewhere on the net and I thought I would upload them to Rapidshare for your enjoyment.

New Links, New Template (and a rounded box hack!)

posted by mmChronic @ 8:31:00 PM

As you'll no doubt have noticed by now we've got a blogspot version of ourt gta:sa skin from the old site. It's not quite finished as there a a few layout problems, one or two 'wrinkles' to sort out, some ickle graphic bits to do and the sidebars to fill but it's nearly there.

No doubt you'll be marvelling at the wondrousness of the rounded boxes which I think are very funky. The code for those came from a post on the Modx blog about the rounded css boxes. It's a really simple hack to implement (which makes it all the better) but it does involve fairly large graphics and I haven't made ours quite large enough as you'll see on some of the longer posts.
"I devised the hypothesis that if I could do it with only one really big sample image and a max of five CSS rules for the basic structure, then I would be able to stop sending folks email along the lines of, 'I'd really like to help out but I don't really do Photoshop tutorials and Google can probably help you figure it out... and yes I'm aware there's a massive gap on your monitor that's large enough to show two HD-res movies side-by-side'."

BTW I say our graphics but I nicked Ryan Thrash's box image (as well as his code) and recoloured and resized it. So that's two thank yous to him then. ;)

Yay! We is back. Or something.

Unearthing the Kenton Bar Bunker

posted by bungers @ 1:33:00 PM

Hmmmmm... Here's a bunker, near to Kenton Bar.
Defence Lines, No. 5

I'm thinking that those offices are either the old ones where you used to have to take your driving test, or the ones just round the corner. Which have now been turned into a nice new housing estate.

Woe is the lost and forgotten history of Newcastle upon Tyne... :(

Fastr

posted by mmChronic @ 8:20:00 AM

If you remember the Google Images game then the idea of fastr should be familiar to you. Fastr uses flickr rather than Google Images so instead of trying to guess the common Google key word you have to guess the common flickr tag.

Fastr is a game that uses flickr images. It loads ten images that all share a common tag, one by one, and you guess what the tag is. When you guess right, the tag will turn blue. Then you can watch the pictures until the next set begins. The faster you guess, the more points you get. The points are reset every five minutes. Don't forget to enter a player name.

I found this one to be a bit trickier than the Google game - there were a few selections where I couldn't guess the tag at all though once it was revealed it was obvious so I'll put it down to being too early. Or something. ;)

Newcastle Evening Chronicle Advert

posted by ILuvNUFC @ 6:28:00 PM

One for the exiled Geordies here I'm afraid.
My mate Hippy Tony captured a new advert from TV for the Newcastle Evening Chronicle which manages to squeeze in a lot of the more beautiful sites in and around Newcastle into a 30 second advert. Nice.
The 18MB MPEG2 video is hosted on Rapidshare which deletes the file after 30 days without a download so get it while you can. If you want. :)

Smaller jets may transform flying

posted by bungers @ 5:28:00 PM

Sorry, I've been meaning to post this for ages, and I've got another three posts lined up in the drafts...

My resolution for 2006 is to buy one of these...

...as featured in this story, cunningly entitled smaller jets may transform flying. It's all about tidgy jets that you can hoof about in. I like. New Links Airlines Inc. will soon be flying out of an airport near you!

Hooray! Welcome back to Old New Links, all is forgiven! ;)

World of Warcraft Level 60 Quest Guide

posted by mmChronic @ 8:27:00 AM

One for me and Bungers.

Bungers and I now have characters in the 40s and it hopefully won't be too long before we hit 60. So Gamespy's World of Warcraft Level 60 Quest Guide should come in handy.

That's where this guide comes in. It's not a step-by-step strategy guide; it's simply a roadmap, a "user's manual" to being level 60. On the following pages, you'll find a listing of just about every high-level quest chain in World of Warcraft, overviews of how the major raids work, and other diversions that level 60 players have been known to enjoy.

And there was me thinking I'd nearly finished. ;)
