We are moving again. Probably.

Yay - back on blogspot. ;)

Regular readers will know that we had some problems with our previous paid hosts when our Drupal installation was suffering from high CPU load after they 'upgraded' their version of PHP & mySQL. They were threatening to kick us off unless we stopped - which we couldn't. It had worked fine under the server env they originally gave us and borked in the 'new upgraded' version they moved us to. To cut a long story short we fled and Shepy offered us hosting on a server he has on the understanding as long as we didn't get to resource hungry we could stay.

Well we got too resource hungry for Shepy's server and have brought it down frequently recently. Sorry Shepy! :/

So where does that leave New Links? I was ready to throw in the towel totally as most of our lazy posters aren't erm.. posting. Posting was coming from ILN, Merg and me and that was about it. However I was slowly changing my mind as we were getting some new posters and Bungers even posted a nice HDTV post after we threatened to publish some pictures we have. Probably.

The upshot is I've found hosts who are Drupal specialists though we will be paying much more than the $4/mo we paid our previous hosts and the zilch that we pay Shepy. The cost isn't too much of a problem as our AdSense will probably just about cover it. The issue is whether it's worth it? Basically we need to sign up for a not very cheap hosting account and transfer the site. There is no point doing this if we are going to have no new posts. I'll have wasted my time and our money. So what do we do chaps?

Huzzah for icons!

Right I take it from the underwhelming lack of response from anyone else that moving NL to a new host will be a total waste of time.

Ok as far as I am concerned New Links is now officially dead - if you want to resurrect elsewhere you can do it.

Lazy fuskers.

Looks like we are picking up bods then! And Bungers posted more yesterday than he did in a month! ;)

Wugsys, be glad to have you aboard mate - just need to get the site rehoused and we'll get you set up.

Merg, I'll IM you today but if we are moving we'll be moving quickly so temp shouldn't be needed. I was going to buy us a month (trying tehm out 1st before I commit to 6/12 months) of hosting today and move the site tonight after work. I can get the DNS repointed as soon as I set up the host and put same holding page up until site is moved so we can check here for news.

When I said this, I wasn't being confrontational; it's just that after starting the drupal site, I had no posting privileges. Maybe that eventually changed, but I thought it was just that the stuff I'd linked to here on the original wasn't well-received, or just not newlinks style, or maybe I'd just spammed it with links. I'd also assumed that you were gearing the new site to be more tech-oriented, and had assumed the popularity had only increased.
So I wasn't crying, but when I read that the traffic was in fact down, and that there was an upset over lack of contribution, I had to say something..
Maybe I'd overlooked something, but I'd checked a couple of times, even after the update, and I'm pretty sure I was restricted to comments only...
Meh, enough about that - For what it's worth, I would still love to see a blogger-free site succeed, and would be happy to help.
Okay, that's a lot of words - I'm done.

Shit. I'm truly sorry Hal - I could have sworn I had set you up with a 'proper' account on NL. That will be rectified as soon as we are back up. But you should have said at time - to continue your Geordie education - shy bairns get nowt.

Your links are spot on - that's why I linked to your site in the 1st place! :)

How's the snow? And can we have some please?

hypersloth said...

Well hell. I guess my bairns are nowt? Or something? Regardless, nice to hear it was a misunderstanding.
Props for knowing about the snow here, but I'd rather keep it.. I like my winters pretty, not just bitterly cold. On the other hand, we only got a few inches, and it makes my cat stupid. He won't go out on the balcony, but he whines (nonstop) that I won't let him outdoors to roam the neighborhood and freeze to death (currently 8 degrees F). I should replace him with a foxdog. Meanwhile, I'm gonna email you; I gotta couple of questions...

bairns = children, nowt = nothing
or
shy children get nothing or in other words don't keep quiet - ask! :)

I heard about the snow on BBC this morning as apparently it's very severe in places. They were quoting a foot of snow for St Louis rather than just a few inches which is why I thought you'd have spare! It's been years since we've had a good snowfall in the UK. Pesky global warming. Or something. :(

Yeah cats aren't the most sensible creatures on this planet - having said that I'd be out in it if we had some. :)

Fire away on the questions...
