Adding "On This Day" v3 to Blogger

I've updated the code to show History Channel & Internet Movie Database (IMDB) On This Day links. See the date above for an idea of how it looks. Code and installation instructions here.

September Icon Contest

It's a straight up fight between the Furbinator and the delectable Ms. Hilton this month, as we didn't have any other entries. Oh, and mmC hasn't shown me how to do the vote/poll thing yet, so you'll just have to leave your vote in the comments field. Closes friday at 4.30pm.

SMS Pub Crawl

The Real Ale Guide have just launched a new SMS service. Text the word GOODPUB to 85130 and it will text you back your nearest pub as listed in the Good Pub Guide 2005. Reply to the recommendation within 2 hours with the word NEXT and you've got yourself a pub crawl. Of course the fact I still don't have a mobile phone (Something to do with having a distinct aversion to having brain cancer. Probably.) may make this a little tricky for me to use.

Death of a h4x0r

As I mentioned in comments earlier there was another death which hit the news because of the involvement of IRC. And here it is.

Skot wanted to use his telescope but the street lights were too bright to let him see the stars. So he decided to 'fix' the lights. Unfortunately for Skot 'fixing' meant tampering with the power supply to turn them off. Silly boy.

Appropriately, but not exactly lterally, his last words in the log were 'brb'.

George listens to voices in his head...

...and it's not just Jeebus.

Apparently he is wired for sound with a voice prompting him through press conferences and public appearances.

Maybe Rumsfeld should get one to keep him on message. On second thoughts it hasn't stopped the flow of Bushisms so maybe it's not such a good idea after all. Imagine that - President of the most powerful country in the world and the dribbling imbecile still can't even speak English properly even with help.

New Links Investigates™ Part II

Frist psot...? <EDIT : Bah!> Anyway, morning, and here's the news....
So, you know how I tee'd up the story earlier on about strange rumblings underground? Well, that bit of grass was actually just above the entrance to the Victoria Tunnel (VT). The tunnel was built in the 1840s to carry coal from Spital Tongues Colliery in Newcastle to the Tyne riverside, and now, clumsy developers have damaged the tunnel! Here's the story...
A prominent part of the North-East's industrial heritage which survived the Blitz has been damaged - by developers building £15m luxury riverside apartments.

And here's the site, just in case ya divvn't kna where it is. It's next to the Bella Vista restaurant on City Road. More or less.

It seems the developers dislodged a massive boulder which "crashed on to the Tunnel".

More bad news for us Tunnel affectionados too..
...on Saturday, safety equipment used to show schoolchildren inside the tunnel, including torches and a £500 gas monitor, were stolen.

Developers Metier Properties have created more than 100 homes and offices on the site and pledged before work began to protect the historic tunnel, which lies directly underneath the site. Newcastle City Council bosses, who secured Grade II listing for the 7ft 3in high tunnel in May this year, said they only granted planning permission for the scheme because of guarantees the tunnel, also used as a wartime air raid shelter, would be protected.

The Ouseburn Advisory Committee and the cooooncil met yesterday and said: "In August 2004, piling works were ongoing adjacent to the tunnel."

"It is understood that either the last pile or second last pile dislodged a boulder which then impacted on the wall of the tunnel, causing a slight bulge on the internal face."

Obviously, we'd normally be straight down there to investigate the damage, but "Without the safety equipment which has been stolen we are not able to carry on with the tours", says Phil from the Heritage Trust. Bah!

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman confirmed a burglary had taken place at the tunnel over the weekend and asked anyone with information to call (0191) 214-6555.

And I'd better be off to wung-urk. Double bah! TTFN!

Sakhnin Match report is up at nufc.com

Full Sakhnin match report is now up at nufc.com. My only comment on this game is how are such a bunch of dirty, cheating bastards being held up as shining examples of peaceful coexistence?

The referee didn't help matters by bottling most decisions. Several of the Sakhnin players should have been off by the end of the first half and more should have went in the second half. I know people say sending offs spoil a game but imagine if they had seriously injured 3 or 4 of our players - we would have been well fscked. Clubs like this need to be taught a lesson and no lesson would have been better learned than them being down to 3 men and 29 goals behind. Cnuts.

And back to the next stage - there's almost confirmation of the fixture dates for the UEFA - and we're not going away to Lisbon. :(
  1. 21st Oct Panionios (a)
  2. 4th Nov Dinamo Tbilisi (h)
  3. 25th Nov Sochaux (a)
  4. 15th/16th Dec Sporting Lisbon (h)

    1. These fixtures are still to be confirmed.

It's not the one that mmChronic posted a while back, it's even better than that.

UEFA Cup Draw

Newcastle's opponents in Group D have been drawn and we face Sporting Lisbon, Sochaux, Panionios, Dinamo Tblisi.

Not a bad group I reckon. And once the fixtures are arranged a trip to Lisbon might be the next New Links Night Out! ;)

Google Announces GMail New Features

Well InsideGoogle has announced them anyway.

Still no sign of the new features on my account but the details and screenshots are here. You can now save draft versions of emails, contact handling has been streamlined with a frequently mailed contact list and you can get your new mail notifications in Atom format so you can use something like Bloglines to check incoming mail or presumably even add it to Firefox's RSS feeds.

Follow Up: The Big Shocker

After the Shocker comes The Big Shocker. It's one of those giant foam hands you see in the crowds at American sports events so you don't even need to practice the sign - just slip on a giant foam mitten and start making oversized rude gestures at people without them even realising it.

New Links Fantasy Football

The league table has been updated but you can't click on individual teams to see which players got them their points so the update may not be finished and this post may be outdated before it's published.

The highest score this weekend was me with 19 points which takes me within two points of Merg at the top of the table. The lowest scorer with a big fat zero was Dogs which strengthens his position as the biggest footballing knaa nowt in Christendom. The only change in league standings is Flip and ILN swapping places again.

A reminder: This 'season' finishes with any games played on October 13th. You have 1 more weekend of action to use any remaining transfers and try and maximize your points.

Dorsai Irregulars

If you are planning on holding a geek convention of any sort then you may want some geek security. The Dorsai Irregulars are sci fi fans who have a sense of duty towards the sci fi community and volunteer their services for various sorts of security roles at conventions.

There's one major drawback to using them. Think Comic Guy then think how far he could chase the average thief. There, I feel, is the inherent problem with this service.

Sam & Max team forms new studio

A nation (and Bungers) rejoices.

Apparently the developers of the now cancelled Sam and Max title were pleasantly suprised at the gaming community's reaction to the cancellation. So surprised in fact they've left Lucas Arts and set up a development company called Telltale Games to produce point and click adventures. So is Sam and Max going to see the light of day? They didn't say in the linked article but their press release apparently mentioned Sam and Max three times.

New Links says No4TheNorthEast

Time for some local politics instead of the three ring circus that is the US Presidential Campaign.

While checking out the Geordie Translator I saw a banner ad in support of the North East Regional Assembly campaign (yes4thenortheast) so I went to their site to have a squint. The first page has a truly laughable quote on it:
On November 4th 2004 we will have the chance to vote for a regional assembly. It will take power from government in London and hand it to the people of the North East.

What a load of shite! As far as I'm aware hardly any power is being devolved from London so surely that should be 'London will patronisingly give us a token bit of power just so we can make this ludicrous claim'. The proposed Regional Assembly is just another excuse for well connected people to get their nose into a trough and spend waste yet more of our money.

From their FAQ:
What powers will it have that will make a difference to my life?
An elected North East Assembly with significant powers over economic and social issues will be able to implement policies that can have enormous impact on our day-to-day lives - for example: economic development, transport, environment, land-use planning, public health and further education. What can be more important than jobs, education, health and the environment?

The modern world in which we live requires flexible and efficient regional government which can react quickly to changing events. Whitehall cannot respond quickly or appropriately enough to our needs.

An elected assembly will also give this region a distinctive political voice. Too often we have lost out to other regions ? whether it?s over the Barnett formula or the Capital of Culture bid ? and we?re not being listened to under the current system

There seems to be a lot of overlap with local councils and One North East in that statement. Where are the powers they are taking from central government? Or are they just taking powers we already have in various bodies already? Some detail on actual powers being devolved would be useful so you would know what you were actually voting as the vote is very soon - 4th November in fact. That's a NO from me then.

Roll on the rebirth of the Kingdom of Northumbria - we'll show them what real power in the North East is! ;)
