Buying a New PC?

Try turning the volume down a bitWelcome to Merglinks™!

If you're in the market for a new PC soon, how about this fine desktop? Or perhaps you'd prefer a laptop?

If you're building your own, perhaps a power button would be a useful addition?

Or perhaps you just want to secure your existing PC?

Class linkage. Well done.

Whilst securing my laptop I found it no longer functions. Am I entitled to a refund?

Re the buying a PC. Was VGA not 256 colours? Hercules/mono 2, CGA 2*4, EGA 16, VGA 256, XVGX/XGA lots was the stepping I remembered yet that ad claims 256,000 colours.

VGA was 16 colours from a palette of 262,000. (at 640x480).

MCGA and SVGA were 256 colours from a either 262,000 or a full 24bit pallette, I forget which. MCGA was 320x256 only and SVGA was 256 cols in 640x480 with 16 cols in 800x600 - again, from memory, so it might be wrong.)

Ah, the "good" old days!

Actually, I think it was 262,144. (which is the same as HAM64 on AGA Amigas...)

Then it's a bit of a misleading claim to have 256,000 colour graphics - it shoudl have read a choice of 16 from 256,000 etc.

I won't be buying one of those then!

I'm sure if you're willing to pay that price they'll upgrade the graphics for you, free of charge!

If so I'll have two please.

Remember JdS and his ridiculously expensive 386? That helicopter game (Comanche?) was good but not enough to make a 386 a worthy purchase at the time.

Aye. And the funky Gravis sound card he had that sounded absolutely amazing for the time -- but only worked with about 2 games...

Commanche's voxel landscape looked incredible back then, too.

Whatever happened to JdS? Abducted by aliens?

I haven't seen (or heard from) him for about 10 years.

The overwhelming memory I have of his 'Look at my uber expensive PC' afternoons is of his lass biting his head off everytime she came home and found a room (which tbf was no bigger than a broom cupboard) full of geeks dribbling over her man's soundcard. ;)

Aye.

I don't believe she ever spoke to me, just got narked at JdS. Perhaps she totally lost it one and and murdlerized him on the spot...

Wasn't she something in the legal profession? (leading to the classic old joke, "is a lady lawyer without her briefs a solicitor?")

She was indeed someone who liked soliciting.

I believe they broke up not long after we left the pol^H^H^HUniversity of Northumbria at Newcastle.

Probably the g33ks-in-a-cupboard scandal didn't help...
