Bruce turns down Toon

I haven't actually been able to check out this link as it's currently suffering too many hits. So, until it works, we can ponder over the rumour that Bruce has turned down the 2.75 million bid in favour of staying with Birmingham.

Whilst we're on about fitba can someone explain how England are automatically through to the next stage providing we draw against Croatia tonight? What if France lose to Switzerland? Wouldn't that leave us with three teams on four points? Assuming that scenario is resolved by counting goals scored then how can we be certain that we will have scored more goals than France or Switzerland?

Yay on the Bruce thing if it's right.

As for the draw/win stuff - if we are equal on points it goes to how you did against each other. Say we and the Swiss end up on the same points they will look at the result of the game between us. We won so we finish higher. Goal difference does come into it at some point but if after comparing points, result between two equal sides and goal difference teams still can't be separated then it's settled by a toss. Yay for international mass debating.

Morning chaps.

Regarding England. If we only draw with croatia then the Swiss would have to beat France by at least 5-0 to qualify ahead of us.Stranger things have happened but this outcome seems very unlikely.

Morning all! I'm back, and hopefully without an interesting selection of diseases this time! ;)

What's everyone doing for the fooosball tonight..? I'm contemplating Bar Oz, but I don't know if I can deal with it yet, as I consumed a large amount of beer all weekend. Did someone say 25p a pint? Make that my round again then!

The problem with looking at how we did against Switzerland is not necessarily going to make things any clearer...

We beat Switzerland, Switzerland beat France tonight, France beat us. So what does that tell you? You've just come full circle without any two teams appearing superior. As ILN says it does come down to goals scored so, as I was suggesting, the TV pundits are wrong to say that we are automatically through with a draw tonight.

And the 5-0 Swiss result would have Switzerland at the top but who comes 2nd??????????? France because they beat us or England because we beat Switzerland??????
Again I think it comes down to goals scored. So someone please tell me how we stand against France on goals scored.

You're right on looking at results between teams not helping. I didn't think about the A beats B, B beats C and C beats A scenario. Mark my words it'll 'come' down to a toss off between Becks and Burnt Arse. Probably.

The pundits may be wrong mathematically but they are right realistically. If you disagree you will have no worries accepting a 10 quid bet with me where I say if we draw we go through?

The only way that will fail is if the Swiss do France by a large margin as ILN says. That is not going to happen which is why I will offer you the bet above.

I'll be watching the match at home with cold beer not the other side of a 30 deep crush at the bar.

Launched for the first time this year, the NewcastleGateshead Cup will see top European football clubs (Feyenoord, Sporting Lisbon, Newcastle United and Glasgow Rangers) competing at St James' Park over a single weekend: 31st July-1st August.

How about we all pile round to soemone's house? I'll check with DCB but I'm sure she'd be happy for everyone to sit round our telly. We have wine, beer, pizza, enchiladas and Bombay mix.

I'll be piling around my house as I know the rules on 'smoking' will be suitable at mine.

Talking of summer football the Masters starts at the telewest soon.

And give me some odds on the bet. What's the odds against the Swiss humping France and us drawing against Croatia?

mmChronic said...

Fscking odds? Who do you think I am? Gambling Stan, the bookie man? It's tenner bet that says if we draw, we go through. I win in that case. Any other way you win. It was a hypothetical bet to show that I was confident that the punters were right if though. You can take me up on it if you want but you'd be a mug.

You're all welcome to come to mine for the match tonight. I'll clarify that 'all' means the New Linkers and not the denizens of the tinterweb! Woman's permission has already been sought and gained.

Facilities include large TV and half time tinterweb cafe for Dogs the tinterwebless man.

denizens of tinterweb! I think I've just found a new name for my band. Your cheque is in the post!

Table as it stands now is here if we draw we are through. Even if Switzerland tonk France we will all (except Croatia) be on equal points but France would have by far the worst goal difference so it would be us and Switzerland going through.
